THE present Manual has been put forth at my suggestion, and therefore it seems desirable that I should state briefly the class for whose sake it has been compiled, and the objects at which it aims. Those for whom it is mainly intended are the upper class of women who, in one form or another, work for their bread, and especially for such amongst them as are gathered together in Guilds and Societies for the promotion of a purer and higher life in morals and religion. As a Parish Priest, in common with many of my brethren, I have often felt the want of some book of devotions especially adapted to these members of our Church, and it has seemed to me that the experience of many years of personal work amongst women thus gathered together, and the intimate knowledge of their |
