the nakedness of the foul; the latter fkreens us from cold, &c. fo doth the righteousness of Chrift from the frigidity of fin, which almost freezes our affections, and benumbs us in fpiritual duties; our garments alfo defend our bodies from the burning fun, fo doth Chrift's righteoufnefs from the fcorching heat of awakened wrath.

Again, our garments are used as ornaments to the body, fo the righteousness of Chrift doth more especially ornament our fouls, fo that we hereby become acceptable to God.

God forbad the Ifraelties to wear garments made of woollen and linen, Deut. xxii. 11, no doubt intending to inftruct us hereby, that Christ's spotless righteousness, and our own filthy rags, fhould not be joined together in the juftification of a finner; and indeed why fhould they, what part can they claim in the great work? What have the best of them merited? Surely nothing but fhame and forrow. What did Chrift bring falvation in part, and leave us to finish the work begun? Or must we begin, and perform a part, and will Chrift make up the deficiency? Muft he be alpha, and we omega, or muft we be alpha, and will he be omega? Let fuch dishonourable thoughts be far from our minds, if Baal be God serve him, but if the Lord Chrift be God, let him have the glory. His arm alone brought falvation, to his name alone be all the praise.

15th, Upon the whole, what a glorious difcovery doth the word of God make unto us, of his wifdom and goodnefs, in the redemption of loft finners by means of a mediator; and what a firm foundation for hope, yea for the plerophory of hope, is laid up for every believer in the holy

life, and fin-atoning death of the Lord Jefus Christ. Can you fail of falvation who caft the anchor of your hope in him? No, it is impoffible. Can the injured law arreft you and condemn you? No, Chrift has fuffered all that juftice could inflict; inflict on one who had engaged in behalf of the obnoxious, and as a furety had bound himself to discharge the debts of his diftreffed people. Being found in Jefus need you fear acceptance? There is to thee O child of grace no condemnation, therefore thou canst never go to hell: but cloathed in the spotlefs garment wove out by Chrift, baving on that righteoufnefs which is of God through faith in Chrift, thou haft the ftrongest recommendation to the favour of God, and therefore fhalt affuredly go to heaven.

This righteousness of Chrift imputed to the believer, gives him as full an abfolution from guilt, as if he had never offended, acquits as intirely in the eye of justice, as if he had never been attainted; and at the fame time confers a title to heaven and glory, as full and inconteftible, as if he haď fulfilled all the precepts of the most holy law of God. In this moft incomparably glorious plan of falvation, in which the attributes of deity fhine forth with astonishing brightnefs, and fweetly harmonize in the most pleasing concord and agreement, do thou more and more employ thy nobleft powers O my foul. Here is an abyfs of wonder, a boundless and bottomlefs ocean of heavenly wif dom, and heavenly love lies open before thee; dare not too deep left thou be swallowed up in the immenfity of mystery; think not to found infinite depths, with the fhort and fcanty line of moft enlightened reason, for nothing's here but infinitude

and

and incomprehenfibility. In God's most bleffed book, as in a garden fair, there let me often walk, no curfe is here for those who live in Christ, nor barren land for finners who believe.

And thou dear reader take this book, the book of God to be thy guide, so shall it be a lamp unto thy feet, and a light unto thy paths. Let this great falvation be uppermoft in thy heart, and foremost on thy tongue, if thou haft tafted that the Lord is gracious, if Jefus has covered thy fins with his righteoufnefs, be not ashamed to own him, nor be back ward to follow him, make mention of him at all times, that his name may be magnified. And in the spirit of gratitude, and the language of triumph, let every believer fay, Jurely in the Lord have I righteousness and ftrength, If. xlv. 24, and they who shall yet be born fball declare his righteousness, Pf. xxii. 31. Yea the heaven fball declare his righteousness, Pf. 1. 6, and his people fhall enjoy the comfortable effects thereof, even, quietness and affurance for ever.
