AND LISSOM FINGERS.
ANDREW WYNTER, M.D.,
"CURIOSITIES OF CIVILIZATION," "OUR SOCIAL BEES," ETC.
PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION,
In preparing this edition of the late Dr. Andrew Wynter's popular work, I found it necessary to expunge much and make considerable additions; but, dealing with facts with which the author should have brought his subjects down to the present time, I have not thought it necessary to bracket my portions of the performance.
Several articles, such as “Dining-rooms for the Working Classes,” “The Under-sea Railroad,” “Mudie's Circulating Library,” “The Clerk of the Weather,” “Messages under the Sea," "The Roast Beef of Old England,” “Fraudulent Trade Marks,” “Town Telegraphs,” have been almost rewritten or largely extended; and I have added two new articles, one being particularly germane to the title of the book,-namely, “The Working of the Postal Telegraph," and “Vegetable Soups,” which may not be an inappropriate tail-piece to “Dining-rooms for the Working Classes.”
Thus the book has become almost a new one, regarding those topics which have necessarily suffered a time-change and received immense development during the last twelve years, that is, since 1864, the date of the previous edition.
