Mr. RAINEY. Mr. Chairman, for the information of the committee, the witness who was expected and who would take up probably the whole day has arrived, but is ill at his hotel. He hopes to be here to-morrow morning. Anticipating he would take up the day, I arranged for no other witness, and I see but one alternative now and that is to adjourn until to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock.

Mr. TINCHER. Who is that witness?

Mr. RAINEY. Mr. Wilson.

The CHAIRMAN. How many witnesses have you?

Mr. RAINEY. I can not answer that question, Mr. Chairman, because I know nothing of the witnesses until their names are given to me in the morning when they arrive here.

The CHAIRMAN. I believe we have already consumed about 90 hours.

Mr. VEEDER. I will state, Mr. Chairman, as previously explained, that we got into a jam by not knowing that the time would be extended beyond the original 20 hours. This week a convention is being held in Texas and Mr. Weld, who was here, had been invited. to address that convention and had to be there this week. Mr. Weld will be back here Monday morning. We have witnesses that are coming and that will be here to-morrow, Friday, and also Monday. Parties that have written in or wired and asked for a hearing are now being told that they should not come on; that the hearings will be closed. We are not urging people to come, but are urging them not to come where they write and state that they desire to come. I do not think that there will be any more here after Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

The CHAIRMAN. And then Mr. Weld after that?

Mr. VEEDER. No; there will be some after Mr. Weld is heard, who will probably take up the time until Wednesday of next week. The CHAIRMAN. Mr. Weld will return about Wednesday?

Mr. VEEDER. Mr. Weld will be here the first thing Monday morning, ready to go on; the first thing Monday morning.

Mr. TINCHER. Is Mr. Weld to be heard again?

Mr. VEEDER. Yes, sir; it will not take him long; it will depend upon your inquisitiveness.

Mr. TINCHER. Is Mr. Brooks going to be heard? I know him very well.

Mr. VEEDER. Mr. Brooks is not in the cattle-raising business. He is employed by Swift & Co. He is not in the operating department. He is in much the same position that I am, and is not employed in the operating department. There have been some of the side issues that I have been able to throw a little light on.

The CHAIRMAN. Are we to understand that you intend to consume the time between now and next Wednesday?

Mr. VEEDER. Yes, sir.

The CHAIRMAN. You expect to conclude about Wednesday?

Mr. VEEDER. Yes, sir. I am basing that upon the time that the witnesses would take. How much beyond that is dependent upon you gentlemen.

The CHAIRMAN. The committee will now recess.

(Thereupon the committee adjourned to meet to-morrow, Thursday, March 18, 1919, at 10 o'clock a. m.)
