X. Thou shalt not covet thy Neighbour's Houfe; thou shalt not covet thy Neighbour's Wife, nor his Servant, nor his Maid, nor his Ox, nor his Afs, nor any thing that is his.

This is the Tenth and laft of thefe Commands.-Now the gracious Defign of God, in this Command, is to lay a Restraint upon the very Defires of our Hearts, which are all known to him, forbidding us to covet, that is, / to fet our Hearts upon, that which is another's Right, and which he is not willing to part with;for an unjust Defire, through the Temptation of the Devil, has too often been followed by an unjuft Attempt to get what we defire, either by Fraud or Violence.-So kind is God in putting a Stop to the very Beginning of Sin, which is in the Heart *.

Ind. But may not a Man defire to buy what belongs to another?"

Miff. Yes, no doubt of it, provided the other can lawfully difpofe of it, and that he is willing to do fa;But if he is not willing, then to continue to defire it, is a Sin against this Law.

GAMING is certainly a Violation of the Tenth Command. It is a Vice that has always its Root in Covetoufnefs, and which in its greedy Wishes devours- its Neighbour's Houfes and Lands, and every thing effe

that is his.

This Sin is often found to go ftill farther, to bring Men at laft to downright Stealing, Robbery, and Murder;-and when the near Profpect of Death obliges thefe wretched Creatures to confefs the Evil of their Ways, it may be obferved, that a Caution againft this abominable Vice of Gaming, always makes one Part of their dying Admonitions, as it hath always been one main Road that led them to that miferable End.

Ind. What does this Law require P Miff. That you keep your Heart with all Dili gence, becaufe out of it proceedeth all manner Wickedness, 1 Kings xxi. Prov. iv. 23.

That you be contented with your own Lot as that which is appointed you by a wife and just God.

Ind. I am convinced, Sir, of the Truth of what you told me before, That these • Commands of God are holy, just, and good, ⚫ and necessary to keep the World in Order.' Q4 Mill.

Mill. But I must tell you befides, That by thefe Commands, as they have been explained by Jefus Chrift, and his Apostles, we muft all be judged at the laft Day to Happinefs or Mifery; thefe being the Foundation of the Duty which Men owe to God, to their Neighbour, and to themfelves.

Ind. Are thefe Duties hard to be underftood and remember'd?'

Mill. You fhall judge yourfelf, when I have repeated them to you, which I will do the next time you come to me: In the mean time use the following Prayer.

The PRAYER.

PEN mine Eyes, O Lord, that I may fee that thy Law is holy, juft, and good, and that I may keep it with my whole Heart;that I may love and honour all those whom thy Providence hath made my Betters; That I may do Violence to no I may abhor all 1
