Ind. You told me before, that in the • Church of Chrift there is a Promife oF THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.'

Mill. And a mighty Bleffing fure it is, That Men, who on account of their many Sins are liable to the Displeasure of God,may be affured, that in the Church of Chrift they will obtain the Forgiveness of their Sins upon moft merciful Conditions; - upon a true Repentance, and Return to their Duty, -and a ready Difpofition to forgive others, as they themselves do hope for Forgiveness from God.

THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY, and AN EVERLASTING LIFE AFTER DEATHThese are Truths which Jefus Chrift has made known to his Church :-And they are as certain as God himself is true. And that they may make the greater Impreffion, upon your Heart, I will repeat to you the very Words of Chrift: The Hour is com

ing, in which all that are in the Graves, fhall hear his Voice, and come forth; they that ⚫ have done Good, unto the Resurrection of

Life; and they that have done Evil, unto the Refurrection of Damnation-So that all Chriftians who know this, may be affured, that this Life is the only Time to chufe where and what they are to be for ever; and may learn not to trifle away that precious Time, which is chiefly allowed them to prépare for Eternity..

Ind. Well, Sir, I fee plainly the Reafon why every one who defires to be a Chriftian, fhould believe thefe Truths."

Mill. Thefe Things are true, and will at Haft be found to be fo, whether Men believe them or not.—And if any Man is loft for ever, for want of giving Credit to them, or for not confidering them, it will fignify little whether he was called a Chriftian, or an Heathen.

Ind. Indeed one would wonder, that fo many Christians, who know thefe Things, can be fo eafy, and fo careless of their Sal'vation.'

Mill. Be you careful for yourfelf, and continue fo, when you are a Chriftian.-In the mean time, I tell you again,-the true Reafons, why fo many among Chriftians forget the Promises they made at their Baptifm, are thefe :-Through the Corruption of Nature they fall into Sin;- they do not what they ought to do, that is, repent and turn to their * John v. 28, 29

Daty immediately-and continuing in Sin, thefe Truths are uneasy to them, because they put them in mind of their Ingratitude to THE Gop, who made them ;-to GOD THE SON, who died for them;-and to GOD THE HOLY GHOST, whom they had grieved by obstinately perfifting in a vicious Course of Life.

-They will not confider, that without Holinefs, i. e. without keeping the Commands of God, and doing his Will, no Man can be faved; and, befides this, thefe Truths put them in mind of an endless Life of Happiness, which they are not difpofed to prepare for,and of a miferable Eternity, which they have Reafon to fear above all Things :-Therefore they strive to forget the Truths they have known and believed ;-and if the Goodness and Long-fuffering of God does not lead them to Repentance," Thefe Articles of "their Faith will be the Articles of their Con"demnation."

Ind. I am convinced, Sir, that these Truths are moft powerful Motives, where they are known and believed, to oblige Men to keep the holy Will and Commands of God, and to walk in the fame all the Days of their Life :-Which you told me was another Part of that Promife which Chriftians make at their Baptifm, and which • I hope you will explain to me when I come again.

The PRAYER.

Saviour of the World, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hath redeemed us, fave us, we moft humbly befeech thee.Grant that the Belief of these great Truths, may ever be prefent in our Minds,-That we may die from Sin, and rife again unto Righteoufnefs. That we may with joyful Hearts afcend to thee, and with thee continually dwell; That we may judge ourselves, and that we may not be condemned, when Thou comeft to judge the World in Righteoufnefs.- -O Lord, grant that we may expect thy Coming with Joy, and find Mercy in the Great Day of Recompence. PART I.

Indian.

OU told me, Sir, that my believing the Truths of the Gospel will not qualify me to become a Chriftian, unless I promife to obey the Will of God, and endeavour to keep his Commands.'

Miff. I told you the Truth :-For altho' we firmly believe, that it is only on the Account of what his Son Jefus Christ has done and fuffered for us, that God will pardon our Sins, and receive us into Favour-yet it is on this Condition, that we repent and forfake our Sins, and obey his Commands as Now Ind. I hope you will continue your kind Inftructions, and let me know what his Will and Commands are.'

Mill. We learn from the Holy Scriptures, that when almoft all Mankind had loft the Knowlege of the true and only God, and the Way of worshiping him, which he had appointed,
