posable property where polygamy prevails; witness the Hindoos, and the Indians of North America. We would advise J. P. to go to church, and improve the ordinances there. If he will worship with none but exemplary Christians, he may be reduced to the folly of those Brownists, some of whom worshipped alone, finding no church so pure as they conceived it ought to be. If he makes a faithful use of his opportunities of improve ment, God will bless him, and may probably provide for his spiritual welfare in a way beyond his hopes. We conceive that it cannot be his duty to introduce dissenters into his town. He ought to be aware that there are blemishes among those who dissent from the church, as well as among those who adhere to it. When AN IMPARTIAL OBSERVER has to speak of great and eminent men, on a public occasion, we do not know that he is called to discuss the private character of the individual, though he is bound to say nothing which is not strictly consistent with truth. When he preaches a funeral sermon on one of his own congregation, or personal friends, he must then use due discrimination, tempered with charity. We admire the spirit of R. Z.; but his paper is too diffuse and declamatory. His moral men appear to us to be very immoral. The letter of IGNOTUS shall be referred to the consideration of the correspondent mentioned by him. We conceive that no one commentary on the Bible is sufficient for the purposes of the Christian minister. Poli synopsis Criticorum, Patrick, Lowth, Calmet, Ainsworth, Calvin, Vitringa, Wetstein, Whitby, Burkitt, Doddridge, Powell, Henry, Macknight, Horsley, Horne, Scott, &c. &c. &c. may be read with advantage. We must again repeat, that Literary intelligence, in order to be inserted, must be sent to the publisher on or before the 15th day of the month. Several articles are omitted in consequence of iuattention to the notice formerly given on this point. There are no circumstances which can justify any person, whether minister or layman, in using the name of God irreverently in conversation. But it would be rash and unwarrantable in the extreme, to conclude from the use of an irreverent expression, at least without knowing all the circumstances of the case, that the profession of the person who employed it was hypocritical. The communication of R. has been received; but as we have not seen the work to which it refers, it is impossible for us to estimate the merits of his paper. As the able examination of DR. TAYLOR'S (of Norwich) Key, which has been communicated to us, will necessarily extend through several numbers; we defer the insertion of any part of it till the ensuing year. A wish to prevent the unnecessary protraction of controversy leads us to remark that H. T. seems to us not to have perceived the exact bearing of the remarks of Biblophilos; at least if we may judge from the authorities which he has produced in confutation of that writer's opinions. It appears to us that there is not a sentiment contained in the quotations from Luther, Calvin, Zanchius, Usher, Baxter, Owen, &c. which is not per fectly consistent with the views expressed by Biblophilos. We do not mean to say that it therefore follows that Biblophilos is right; but only that to insert extracts which contain nothing inconsistent with that writer's avowed principles, and which therefore would not be decisive of the point at issue between him and H. T., would be needlessly to lengthen the discussion. H. T.'s supplementary paper has been received. We should be glad if I. S. c. would instance the cases in which we had endeavoured to promote what he calls a philosophical religion. Our endeavours we will be bold to say bave been uniformly directed to discourage the admixture of metaphysical subtleties with the truth as it is in JESUS.
