"She was, therefore, uneasy at times, lest she should "have been mistaken, and not truly brought to God." "I observed to her, that the use of these convictions was, "to bring the minds of men to an entire dependence upon "Christ for their whole salvation, and to cut them off "from all false and carnal reliances; that gross sinners, "who had been long trained in habits of iniquity, or self-righteous persons, who had firmly rested their "hopes upon themselves and their own will, wisdom, "and goodness, were usually the people who were thus "visited of God by the severe application of his holy "law upon their consciences; because it was apparently "necessary to bring them fully from sin and delusion; "that sometimes God had thus more than usual visited "those, who were called to be ministers, and conse

quently messengers of grace to others, in order to "enable them to speak to the hearts of those under trials " and temptations from their own experience; but that, 66 upon the whole, when any soul was truly convinced of "the evil of sin, of the impossibility of removing either "its guilt or power but by coming to Christ, and of the "absolute necessity of resting every hope upon him for

godliness here and life hereafter; the great object was "obtained. If therefore she could say from her heart, "that Christ was all her salvation and all her desire, and "renounced every other hope or plea but his precious "blood and righteousness for acceptance with God; " doubtless God would be as good as his word to her, "and that, through his very faithfulness, she must be "saved. With this and much more, she seemed to be "comforted.

"On

"On the 25th in the morning, when I came to her "chamber, I found her much afflicted with the soreness "of her throat, which had been increasing for several days, but was now become so very severe, that she

was not able to receive food, and therefore lived only "upon the cordial draughts sent her by the apothecary. "Her fever was high as usual. She seemed also to be

again harrassed at times with doubts and fears respecting "her eternal state; but these I considered as suggestions "from the enemy, heightened by the exacerbations of "her disorder, and her decreasing powers to struggle. "with them, or even for life itself. I suggested to her "various consolatory passages of scripture, as they "occurred to me, or as she was able to attend to them. "She earnestly requested my prayers: "Do, my dear papa, do pray for me,"-" I do, my dear child, I do. "I am every hour, and almost continually praying for you: I shall not cease to do so.

"O how hard and trying is the struggle between life "and death! I could not but retire, and pray, that the "Lord would be pleased to abate the anguish of her sufferings, or increase her faith and patience to honor "him in bearing them.

"At another time in this day, she expressed much "concern upon account of her drowsiness, which " hindered her from thinking and praying as she desired. "I requested her not to be perplexed upon that account,

"and assured her, that all her friends, as well as myself, "were thinking of and praying for her; and, more than "all, that though she could not now think much of "Christ, he was thinking of her, and was careful to "do better for her than she herself could either ask or "think.-With these reflections, she seemed to muse "and to be comforted.

"About six o'clock, on the 26th, in the morning, "she desired that I might be called. When I came to "her, I found that she had gone through a very bad and "distressing night of sickness and pain.-She desired me "to kiss her; and, as I bowed down, she clung about "my neck with her poor withered arm, and, pressing "her lips upon mine for a considerable time, she most

affectionately embraced and kissed me. She then said; "O my papa, pray for me!-I am going to die: but I "am resigned, and, I think, I can say, that I am en"tirely and truly resigned, to the Lord's will, and trust "that I am ready to receive what he has appointed and "prepared for me."-"I do not cease to pray for you, "my dearest child: I cannot cease. But you have a "better intercessor than your poor father, even the Lord "Jesus Christ, who is touched with the feeling of our “infirmities, and who is now, I doubt not, pleading for "you and for me before the throne of God. He cannot "ask in vain. A crown of righteousness he hath pre"pared for them that love him; and be assured, that he "hath prepared one, my dear child, for you, even for

you." With suggestions of this kind, I endeavored to "fill her thoughts. She seemed to ponder upon them "for a time in calmness of spirit; but her bodily pains

again coming on, and the help of her nurse being re"quired, I left the room.

"Returning afterwards, upon some remission of her "pains, I took occasion to mention the office of Christ, "as the great Mediator and High Priest of our profes“sion, who never left his people in their extremities, "but had recorded for them his peculiar blessing, which "I would repeat to her. I then, lifting up my hands "over her, and, with all the emphasis of affection, pronounced the words enjoined to be used by the representatives of the great High Priest for the Church The Lord bless "upon earth. great Physician of the soul, who taketh away all our "iniquities, who healeth all our infirmities, who giveth "life and peace for evermore.-As well as she was able, "she gave her assent; and I am persuaded it was the "gracious assent of faith and hope.

"On the 27th, I was called up about three o'clock, "and was informed, that she was dying. I found her "panting in the last agonies. "I am dying (said she) my dear father! O pray for

of assurance, and with "doubts and fears. She was anxious to know her

repeated the promises of God in her case, and his loving assurances of free pardon and tender mercy to "all that came to him, simply trusting in Christ Jesus. "She then became more tranquil and composed: but "said no more, the agonies increasing upon her, and "taking away the powers of speech. I poured out my prayers, that" the enemy might be made still as a "stone, while this ransomed one passed over the Jordan "of death to her everlasting inheritance. She soon "afterwards fell into a doze, and continued so for some "time, till, with a long deep sigh, she finished her "course, and entered, I trust, into the joy of her Lord."
