RUFUS AUSTIN PUTNAM. Born in Sutton, Mass., 18 Nov., 1791. Son of Reuben and Elisabeth (Mason) Putnam. Graduated at Harvard College, 1822. Ordained pastor at Fitchburg, Mass., 4 Feb., 1824; dismissed 1 May, 1831. Installed at Chichester, 29 August, 1832; dismissed 11 July, 1843. Installed at Epsom, 5 May, 1846; dismissed 3 May, 1852. Acting pastor there 1853 to 1854. Without charge at Pembroke until his death, 14 Nov., 1873, aged 82 years, less 4 days.

JACOB SCALES. Born in Freeport, Maine, 7 March, 1788. Son of Samuel and Sarah (Moulton) Scales. Graduated at Dartmouth College, 1817, and Andover, 1820. Ordained pastor in Colchester, Ct., 27 Dec., 1820; dismissed 1 June, 1826. Installed at Henniker, 17 Jan., 1827; dismissed 1 March 1839. Installed at Cornwall, Vt., 3 July, 1839; dismissed 16 June, 1842. Acting pastor, Plainfield, Oct., 1842 to June, 1861. Without charge in Plainfield until death, 16 Oct., 1873, aged 85.

NATHAN WEBB SHELDON. Born in Woolwich, Maine, 19 Oct., 1792. Son of William and Sarah (Webb) Sheldon. Graduated at Bangor Seminary, 1822. Ordained pastor at Brownville, Maine, 2 June, 1824; dismissed 2 March, 1833. Installed at Rumford, Maine, colleague of Rev. D. Gould, 23 Jan., 1834; dismissed 1837. Installed, Gray, Maine, 22 Jan., 1838; dismissed 25 Oct., 1844. Acting pastor in several churches in Maine. In Stoddard, 1858-9, and in Dublin, 1860. Removed to Natick, Mass., 1870, and without charge there till death, 26 Nov., 1873, aged 81.

JOHN SMITH. Born in Weathersfield, Ct., 2 Sept., 1796. Graduated at Yale College, 1821. Studied at Princeton, 1821-2, and Andover, 1823-4. Ordained pastor at Trenton, N. J., 8 March, 1826. Installed at Exeter, 1st Church, 15 Mar., 1829;

dismissed 14 Feb., 1838. Installed, Wilton, Ct., 20 Feb., 1839; dismissed June, 1848. Installed, Kingston, 26 July, 1848; dismissed 28 Sept., 1850. Installed, York, Maine, 1st Church, 9 Oct., 1850; dismissed 20 Mar., 1855. Acting pastor at Long Ridge and Stamford, Ct., 1855-8. Without charge at Stamford till death, 20 Feb., 1874, aged 77.

TERTIUS. DUNNING SOUTHWORTH. Born in Rome, N. Y., 1802. Entered, but did not graduate, at Hamilton College; graduated at Andover in 1826. Acting pastor at Paris, N. Y., 1829-32. Ordained 7 Oct., 1832. Installed at Claremont, 17 June, 1834; dismissed 19 July, 1838.

Installed at Franklin, Mass., 23 Jan., 1839; dismissed 1850. Without pastoral charge till 1859. Acting pastor at Pleasant Ridge, Wis., 1859-64. Died at Bridgewater, N. Y., 2 Aug., 1874, aged 72.

ALVAN TOBEY, D. D. Born in Wilmington, Vt., 1 April, 1808. Son of Rev. Alvan Tobey. His father was born in Berkley, Mass., 1778; graduated at Brown University, 1799; ordained at Wilmington, Vt., Sept., 1803, and died 18 Oct., 1810. The son graduated at Amherst in 1828; at Andover, 1831. Ordained pastor at Durham, 2 Nov., 1833; dismissed 20 Dec., 1870. Soon removed to South Berwick, Me. Without charge, but supplying, temporarily, churches in vicinity till death, 21 Sept., 1874, Aged 66. Dr. Tobey was Scribe of the General Association in 1845, at Portsmouth; moderator in 1851, at Acworth. Trustee of the New-Hampshire Missionary Society from 1855. Chosen corporate member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, in 1862, and a member of the National Council in 1865. Received the Honorary Degree of D. D. from Dartmouth in 1867.

MILTON WARD. Born in Plymouth. 1807. Son of Benjamin and Mary (Bartlett) Ward. Graduated at Dartmouth 1825; took medical degree there in 1829, and practiced at Windham. Studied theology with Rev. C. Cutter, of that town. Ordained pastor at Hillsboro', 23 July, 1834; dismissed 10 Nov. 1835. Took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church, and has been missionary in various places; Lynn, Mass., 1836, Trenton, Michigan, &c. Was living at Detroit in 1870, and his death is reported, 1874, aged 67. `

HENRY WOOD. Born in Loudon, 10 April, 1796. Son of Eliphalet and Elizabeth (Tilton) Wood. Graduated at Dartmouth. 1822. Tutor there one year. Studied at Princeton, 1823-4, and Professor of Latin and Greek in Hampden Sidney College, Va., 1825. Ordained pastor at Goffstown, 31 May, 1826; dismissed 30 Nov., 1831.

Installed at Haverhill, 14 Dec., 1831; dismissed 3 March, 1835. Installed at Hanover, 8 March 1835; dismissed 21 Dec., 1840. Editor of Congregational Journal at Concord, 1841-54; and acting pastor at Canaan, 1851-3. U. S. Consul, Syria and Palestine, 1854-7. Chaplain in U. S. Navy from 1858 until death at Philadelphia, 9 Oct., 1873, aged 77.

WORTHINGTON WRIGHT. Born June 16, 1785, in Windsor. Mass. Graduated at William's College, 1806. Studied at Ando ver one year in the class of 1810. Ordained pastor at Woodbury, Ct., 30 Jan., 1811; dismissed 1812. Home Missionary in Penn., 1812-15. On account of trouble with his eyes, he left the ministry for a time, studied medicine, attended lectures in New York City, and practiced that profession fourteen years; the last part of the time in Rochester, N. Y. In 1830 he resumed ministerial labor, and preached six years in Milton. Saratoga County, and Batavia, Genesee County, N. Y. Installed at Woodstock, Vt., 14 Feb., 1838; dismissed 1850. Install

ed at Charlestown, 16 March, 1852; dismissed 23 Oct., 1855. Without charge at Acworth, N. H., and Fredonia, N. Y. Died in Buffalo, N. Y., 28 Nov. 1873, aged 88.

These twenty-one deceased ministers reached the remarkable average age of 72 years, 4 months; and only six of the number were less than 70; seven were from 70 to 80; five from 80 to 90, and one, Jones, was 91. Only Hooker and Laird were less than 60, and they, only, died while in pastoral service; and sixteen of the twenty-one were without charge.

REPORT OF THE MINISTERS' AND WIDOWS' CHARITABLE FUND.

The annual meeting of the Trustees of the Ministers' and Widows' Charitable Fund was held in Concord, June 3, 1874.

At a meeting of the Prudential Committee, held immediately after the annual meeting of the Trustees, appropriations were made to the amount of $180 to three aged clergymen, and $200 to eight widows in indigent circumstances. The following donations and legacies have been received from June 1st, 1873, to June 1st, 1874.
