REMARKS.

The Summaries are placed at the close of the Narrative of Religion. The table of Associations is omitted, but their member-ship is given in the Alphabetical List.

The "List of Ministers" is made as complete as may be to Sept. 10th. It is impossible for the Secretary to decide upon the question of reporting churches which may virtually be merged in other churches, or have become extinct. It is desirable that the different Conferences decide this question, and report according to the real state of the case. More care should also be taken in reporting the names of ministers "without charge" in the limits of the different Conferences. The Secretary is not responsible for any omissions of this kind which may be found. There is a good degree of accuracy and promptness in reporting statistics, and many of the schedules are returned completely filled out. For this the Secretary and the churches are thankful. The returns for the "Narrative of the State of Religion" are very incomplete, and imperfectly made out in most of our Conferences. In a few they are well and faithfully done. No accurate Narrative can be written so long as this is true. One Conference made no return, and from another, one of the large ones, there was report from only three churches. It cannot be expected that the Secretary can write definitely all the changes concerning a parish of which he has no report. As this Narrative is to be printed before the meeting, the reports must be sent before that time, and corrections cannot then be made. The Secretary regrets that the Statistical Secretary has left the State, so that the churches have lost this year his accurate knowledge, and careful records in so many cases. Grateful acknowledgment is made of his interest and valuable aid in the work done. The copies of the Minutes should be circulated as widely as possible, and at once after their arrival.

F. D. AYER, Secretary.
