they fulfilled the prophets, for, "thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer2;' Christ suffered, that he might save much people alive. Joseph comforted his brethren, saying, "Fear not, for I will nourish you and your little ones ";""fear not, for I am in the place of GOD;" Christ comforted his disciples in similar language," Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom ";"" he that cometh to me shall never hunger, and be that believeth on me shall never thirst";""be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid."

Joseph, then, was, in many striking particulars, a type of Christ.

Jacob adopted Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph, as his own sons; he preferred Ephraim the younger son before Manasseh the elder, thus continuing the figure of the adoption of the covenant of Christ. And he said, "The angel, which redeemed me from all evil, bless, the lads"." This angel was, as we have "the angel of the covenant," "GOD"" the

mank," Christ the Redeemer, who came to "redeem them that were under the law, that they might receive the adoption of sons1."

Joseph died in the faith of his fathers, and he confirmed to his brethren the promises which GOD had made to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacobm.

Thus we find, that Abraham, the grandfather of Israel or Jacob, had been called from the land of his fathers, and had been sent into the land of Canaan ". And God said to him, "Unto thy seed will I give this land." And Abraham "went down into Egypt to sojourn there," because "there was a famine in the land P," but he afterward went up out of Egypt "unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning. "Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan." "And the Lord said unto Abram, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward; for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it and to thy seed for ever3. "And God said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall

afflict them four hundred years: and also that nation whom they shall serve will I judge, and afterward shall they come out with great substance; in the fourth generation they shall come hither again." And God made a covenant with Abraham, and said, "I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a GOD unto thee and to thy seed after thee; and I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God; and God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou and thy seed after thee in their generations ". This covenant was that of circumcision; and whoever broke that covenant by not adopting this outward sign of it, was to "be cut off from his people"."

Isaac also dwelt in the land of Canaan; and when there was "famine in the land," GOD said to him, "Go not down into Egypt, dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and I will bless thee, for unto thee and thy seed will I give

all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; and I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries, and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. And Isaac dwelt at Gerary." Jacob also "dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan"." But, when famine was sore in all lands, and Joseph had sent for his father that he should come into Egypt, GoD said to Israel," in the visions of the night," "I am GOD, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt, for I will there make of thee a great nation. I will go down with thee into Egypt, and I will also surely bring thee up again;" and God had previously said to him, "The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land." So Jacob, with "all his seed," went into Egypte. And, when Jacob died, his body was embalmed, and was carried into the land of Canaan, Joseph going with it; and, when Joseph had buried his father, he "returned into Egypt 8."

you, and shall carry up my bones from hence. So Joseph died, an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypth."

Thus it appears, that Abraham, the ancestor of the Israelites, was called from his original country into Canaan, which latter land was promised unto him and his seed for ever; and that his grandson Jacob went, with all his seed, from Canaan into Egypt. We find also, that a promise had been made to Abraham, that his seed should be brought back to possess the land of Canaan; and that this promise was renewed to Jacob, and was repeated by Joseph just before his death.

Thus GOD established his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, " to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangersi;" He " did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob." But Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were only pilgrims and strangers in the land', and they, consequently, never received the land of Canaan as a possession. Abraham removed into this land, but GOD" gave him none inheritance in it, not
