THE idea embodied in this work was suggested
by the practical method adopted by a celebrated Biblical scholar, who abstracted all the words of Jesus from the sacred text, that he might be enabled to read and study them more fully, thus divested of their surroundings. These words so selected he continued devoutly and patiently to study with great profit and comfort to himself.
If the author of this volume had done nothing more than this, he would have done much for the unfolding of the “mind that was in Jesus” to the devout students of the Holy Word; but he has enlarged upon it, and by a method as grand as it is simple, has connected together in a collocation from the four Evangelists the acts and sayings of the Saviour, in such a way that we have the completest, and at the same time the most concise life
