(vi) of words are but short, because I would have more space for the lessons, which sooner bring the child to reading.—I have divided the words of more than one syllable according to the Rules for Spelling. I have made a Catechetical Discourse, wherein the Rules for Spelling are explained, the use of Points or Stops, Characters used in Printing or Writing, Capital Letters, and other necessary things are considered; and if any person shall desire a farther instruction in Grammar, Writing, Accounts, and many other parts of learning, I have amply provided for him in my "General Introduction to Trade and Business." To oblige some friends and well-wishers, I have added a short Introduction to Writing and Arithmetic; and the Numeration, Pence, and Multiplication Tables, as they are used in schools: also some Instructions by way of Fable or Allegory; and this is done in such a manner, as that it cannot fail of delighting, as well as improving children, for whose sake only this book is published. Upon the thorough consideration of what is herein exhibited, I cannot think of any other necessary addition or alteration than what this edition contains; but if any good-natured brother shall advise any thing that will make the Piece more useful, I will be thankful for any such information.
