The Journal of the Franklin Institute is the oldest periodical in the United States devoted to the spread of Information on subjects connected with the Mechanic and Manufacturing Arts, and the only one containing a complete record of American Patents issued since its establishment in January, 1826.

Hoffman, the Novelist, his successor was Timothy Flint, and the present editor is Louis Gaylord Clarke. The Knickerbocker has been one of the most brilliant periodicals of the United States. It counted among its contributors Washington Irving, Paulding, William Ware, Bryant, and Longfellow. Almost all the writers who during the last 20 years have achieved a reputation in the United States, commenced their literary career either as critics or novel writers in its columns.
