22 וְהִשְׁלַחְתִּי בָכֶם אֶת־חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה וְשָׁכָּלָה אֶתְכֶם וְהִכְרִיתָה אֶת־־בְּהֶמְתְּכֶם וְהִמְעֶיטָה אֶתְכֶם וְנָשָׁמוּ דַּרְכֵיכֶם: 23 וְאִם־בְּאֵלֶה לֹא תִנְסְרוּ לִי וַהֲלַכְתֶּם עַמִּי קֶרִי: 24 וְהָלַכְתִּי אַף־אֲנִי עִמָּכֶס בְּקֶרִי וְהִכֵּיתִי אֶתְכֶם גם־־אָנִי שֶׁבַע עַל חַטאתֵיכֶם: 25 וְהֵבֵאתִי עֲלֵיכֶם חֶרֶב נִקְמֶת נְקַם־בְּרִית וְנֶאֱסַפְתֶּם אֶל־עָרֵיכֶסְ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי דֶבֶר בְּתוֹכְכֶם וְנִתַּתֶּם בְּיַד־־אוֹיב : 26 בְּשִׁבְרִי לָכֶם מַטֵה־־לֶחֶם וְאָפוּ עֶשֶׂר נָשִׁים לַחְמְכֶם בְּתַנּוּר אֶחָד וְהֵשִׁיבוּ לַחְמְכֶם בַּמִּשְׁקָל וַאֲכַלְתֶּם וְלֹא תִשְׂבָּעוּ :

27 וְאָס־בְּרֹאת לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ לִי וַהֲלַכְתֶּם עמי בְּקֶרִי : 28 וְהָלַכְתִּי עִמָּכֶס בַּחֲמַת קֶרִי וְיִמָּרְתִּי אֶתְכֶם אַף־אָנִי שֶׁבַע עַל־־חַטאתֵיכֶם: 29 וַאֲכַלְתֶּם בְּשָׂר בְּנֵיכֶם וּבְעַר בְּנְתֵיכֶם תּאכֵלוּ: 30 וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּי אֶת־־בָּמְתֵיכֶם וְהִכְרַתִּי אֶת־חַמָּנֵיכֶם וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־ פִּגְרֵיכֶם עַל־־פִּגְרֵי גִּלְוּלֵיכֶם וְנָעֲלֶה נַפְשִׁי אֶתְכֶם :

וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־עָרֵיכֶם חָרְבָּה וַהֲשְׁמוֹתִי אֶת־מִקְדְּשֵׁיכֶם וְלֹא אָרִים בְּרִיחַ נִיתְחֲכֶסְ : 32 וַהֲשִׁבֹתִי אֲנִי אֶת־ הָאָרֶץ וְשָׁמָמָוּ עָלֶיהָ אֹיְבֵיכֶם הַיֹּשְׁבִים בָּהּ: 33 וְאֶתְכֶם אֲזָרֶה בַגּוֹיִם וַהֲרִיקֹתִי אַחֲרֵיכֶס חֶרֶב וְהָיְתָח אַרְצְכֶם שְׁמָמָה וְעָרֵיכֶם יִהְיוּ חָרְבָּה: 34 אָז תִּרְצֶה הָאָרֶץ אֶת־שַׁבְּתתִּיהָ כָּל יְמֵי הָשַׁמָּה וְאַתֶּם בְּאֶרֶץ אִיְבֵיכֶם אָז תִּשְׂבַּת הָאָרֶץ וְתִרְצָת אֶת־שַׁבְּתתֵּיהָ : 35 כָּל־ יְמֵי חָשַׁמָּה תִּשְׁבָּת אֵת אֲשֶׁר לֹא־שָׁבְתָה בְּשַׁבְּתתֵּיכֶם בְּשִׁבְתְּכֶם עָלֶיה : 36 וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִים בָּכֶם וְהֵבֵאתִי מרֶךְ בִּלְבָבָם בְּאַרְצָת אֹיְבֵיהֶם וְרָכַף אֹתָם קוֹל עֶלֶה נִדָּף וְנָסְוּ מְנְחַת־חֶרֶב וְנָפְלוּ וְאֵין רֹדֵף : 37 וְכָשְׁלָוּ אִישׁ־ בְּאָחִי כְּמַפְנֵי־חֶרֶב וְרֹדֵף אָן וְלֹא־תִהְיֶה לָכֶם תְּקוּמָה לִפְנֵי אֹיְבֵיכֶם: 38 וַאֲבַדְתֶּם בַּגּוֹיִם וְאֶכְלֶה אֶתְכֶם אָרֶץ אֹיְבֵיכֶם : 39 וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִים בָּכֶם יִמַקוּ בַּעֲנָם

yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing-time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.

6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.

14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;

15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:

16 I also will do this unto you, I will even appoint § over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague; that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain ; for your enemies shall eat it.

17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you: and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

20 And your strength shall be spent in vain for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield

their fruits.

21 And if ye walk contrary ‡ unto me, and will not hearken unto me: I will bring seven times more plagues upon you, according to your sins.

The Hebrew word, rendered contrary in this verse, as also in verse 23, 24, 27, and 28, means chance; and the signification is, that, if you attribute any of these troubles to chance, or to the ruling of the planets, and not to the hand of Providence, (which notion will hinder you from making a close scrutiny into your actions, to know in what you have offended the Deity,) in such case he will bring more and heavier troubles upon you, to open your eyes that ye may perceive it is the band of God that smites you; but, if you will obstinately continue to attribute them to chance, he will increase your troubles, and so on :-for, the number seven in verse 21, 24, and 28, doth not mean exactly, but a plurality of terms.

אֲנִי

יְבוּלָהּ וְעֵץ הַשָּׂדֶה יִתֵּן פִּרְיוֹ : 5 וְהִשִׁיג לָכֶם רֵישׁ אֶת־ בָּצִיר וּבָצִיר יַשִׂיג אֶת־־זֶרַע וַאֲכַלְתֶּם לַחְמְכֶם לָשׂבַע שני וִישַׁבְתֶּם לָבֶטַח בְּאַרְצְכֶם :

6 וְנָתַתִּי שָׁלום בָּאָרֶץ וּשְׁכַבְתֶּם וְאֵין מַחֲרִיד וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי חַיָּה רָעָה מִן־הָאָרֶץ וְחֶרֶב לֹא־תַעֲבֹר בְּאַרְצְכֶם: 7 וּרְדַפְתֶּם אֶת־אֹיְבֵיכֶם וְנָפְלוּ לִפְנֵיכֶם לֶחָרב : 8 וְרָדְפוּ מִכֶּם חֲמִשָּׁה מֵאָה וּמֵאָה מִכֶּם רְבָבָה יִרְדְּפוּ וְנָפְלוּ אִיְבֵיכֶם לִפְנֵיכֶם לֶחָרֶב:

9 וּפָנִיתִי אֲלֵיכֶם וְהִפְרֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם וְהִרְבֵּיתִי, אֶתְכֶם שלישי וְהֵקִימתִּי אֶת־־בְּרִיתִי אִתְּכֶם:

10 ואכלְתֶּם יָשָׁן נוֹשָׁן וְיָשָׁן מִפְּנֵי חָרֶשׁ תּוֹצִיאוּ :

11 וְנָתַתִּי מִשְׁכָּנִי בְּתוֹכְכֶם וְלֹא־־תִנֶעֶל נַפְשִׁי אֶתְכֶם: 12 וְהִתְהַלָּכְתִּי בְּתוֹכְכֶם וְהָיִיתִי לָכֶם לֵאלהִים וְאַתֶּם תִּהְיוּ־לִי לְעָם :

יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מְהְיֹת לָהֶם עֲבָדִים וָאֶשְׁבּר מטת עֶלְכֶם וָאוֹלֵךְ אֶתְכֶם קְוֹמְמִיוּת : 14 וְאִם־לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ לִי וְלֹא תַעֲשׂוּ אֵת כָּל־־הַמָּצות הָאֵלֶה: 15 וְאִם־בֶּחָקְתַי תִּמְאָסוּ וְגַם אֶת־־מִשְׁפָּטִי תִּגְעַל נַפְשְׁכֶם לְבִלְתִּי עֲשׂוֹת אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֹתַי לְהַפְרְכֶם אֶת־בְּרִיתִי : 18 אַף־אֲנִי אֶעשֶׂה־זאת לָכֶם וְהִפְקַדְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם בֶּחָלָה אֶת־הַשַׁחֶפֶת וְאֶת־־הַקַדַּחַת מְכַלּוֹת עֵינַיִם וּמְדִיבַת נָפֶשׁ וּזְרַעְתֶּם לָרִיק זרעכם וַאֲכָלָהוּ אֹיְבֵיכֶם : 17 וְנָתַתִּי פָנַי בָּכֶם וְנְגַפְתֶּם לִפְנֵי אֹיְבֵיכֶם וְרָדוּ בָכֶם שְׂנְאֵיכֶם וְנַסְתָּם וְאֵין־רְדֵף אֶתְכֶם : 18 וְאִם־ עַד־אֵלֶה לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּ לִי וְיָסַפְתִּי לְיַפְרָה אֶתְכֶם שֶׁבַע עַל־חַטְאתֵיכֶם : 19 וְשָׁבַרְתִּי אֶת־גְּאוֹן עָנְכֶם וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־שְׁמֵיכֶם כַּבַּרְזֶל וְאֶת־אַרְצְכֶם כַּנְחשֶׁה : 20 וְתָם לָרִיק כַּחֲכֶם וְלֹא־תִתֵּן אַרְצְכֶם אֶת־יְבוּלָהּ וְעֵץ הָאָרֶץ לֹא יִתֵּן פִּרְיו : 21 וְאִם־־תֵּלְכוּ עִמִּי קֶרִי וְלֹא תאבוּ לִשְׁמֹעַ לִי וְיָסַפְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם מַכָּה שֶׁבַע בְּחַטאתֵיכֶם :
