LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL To His Excellency PHILLIPS LEE GOLDSBOROUGH, Governor of Maryland and President of the Geological Survey Commission, Sir:-I have the honor to present herewith the sixth volume of a series of reports dealing with the systematic geology and paleontology of Maryland. The preceding volumes have dealt with the Lower Devonian, Lower Cretaceous, Eocene, Miocene, and Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits and the remains of animal and plant life which they contain. The present volume treats of the Middle and Upper Devonian deposits and their contained life, a knowledge of which is very important from an educational and scientific standpoint.
