Flirtation in America, by Charles Sealsfield. 8vo. New York. Sealsfield (Siegelfeld).—Life in the New World; or, Sketches of American Society, by Charles Sealsfield (Siegelfeld). Translated from the German, by Gustavus Hebbe, LL.D., and James Mackay, M.A. 8vo, pp. 349. New York, 1844. This closely printed two-column volume was published in seven numbers. It consists of a series of Tales under the following titles: 1. The Courtship of George Howard, Esq 2. The Courtship of Ralph Doughby, Esq. 3. The Life of a Planter. 4. Scenes in the South-West. 5. The Squatter Chief; or, the First American in Texas. The nationality of the Author of the above Works does not seem to be sufficiently established as yet. In the German edition of his Works he signs himself" Charles Sealsfield," and the Preface would almost leave the impression of his being an American; but it does not seem to admit any longer of a doubt that he is a native of Germany, who expatriated in early life to America, of the above Works, only "Tokeah," or the "White Rose," was published first in the English Language: all his other works have first been published in German. The distinguishing features of Sealsfield's Works are thorough knowledge of human nature, skilful delineation of character, dramatic dialogue, and a rare talent for description. Their hero is not a single person, or a group of individuals, but the whole people, in its social, public, and private life; its material, political, and religious circumstances, its past and its future. It is surprising that the Works of so powerful a writer should hitherto have completely escaped the attention of the English reading public. Sears.
