MUNICIPAL DOCUMENTS OF AMERICAN CITIES.

This collection of the charters, ordinances, and other documents of American cities has been brought together for the purpose of illustrating the development of municipal government in America, and is intended to be used in connection with the instruction and seminary work in the department of History and Political Science. Thirty-five cities are more or less fully represented in the collection, which now contains upwards of three hundred volumes. As there is no fund available for supplying the deficiencies in the various sets, or for the increase of the collection, gifts of city documents, or of books and pamphlets relating to municipal government, will be gladly received, and will add much to the usefulness of the collection. Packages should be addressed to "Cornell University Library, Ithaca, N. Y.," and may be sent by express at the expense of the Library.

The District of Columbia is a municipal corporation whose jurisdiction extends over what were formerly the municipalities known as the city of Washington, the city of Georgetown, and the county of Washington, the charters of which were repealed in 1871, and a territorial scheme of government for the District established, which was practically controlled by the Board of Public Works. In 1874 the territorial government was abolished, and the management of the affairs of the District was provisionally vested in a board of three Commissioners. In 1878 this system was ratified and established as the permanent form of government for the District of Columbia. For the municipal documents of the former city of Washington, see Washington, D. C.
