KANAWHA RIVER The Kanawha River is formed by the confluence of the New and Gauley Rivers in southwestern West Virginia. It flows in a northwesterly direction and empties into the Ohio River at Point Pleasant, W. Va. (265.7 miles below Pittsburgh, Pa.). The principal physical characteristics of the stream are: Length, 97 miles; average slope from Kanawha Falls to Paint Creek (14.5 miles), 2.8 feet per mile, from Paint Creek to Lock 10 (61.3 miles), 1 foot per mile, from Lock 10 to mouth (19.2 miles), 0.37 foot per mile; drainage area, about 12,300 square miles; and maximum and minimum discharges at the mouth, about 300,000 and 900 cubic feet per second respectively. The river has been improved to mile 90.6 by the construction of locks and dams. The original navigation system consisted of 10 locks and dams, numbered downstream, providing a navigable depth of 6 feet. These structures are being replaced by 4 locks and dams, 3 in the Kanawha River, numbered upstream, and 1 in the Ohio River, 13.5 miles below the mouth of the Kanawha. These new locks and dams will provide a navigable depth of 9 feet throughout the improved section of about 91 miles. Available bridge clearances are shown in the mileage table. Pertinent data in connection with the locks and dams are given on the following page. 3 Under construction; upon completion, old Locks and Dams Nos. 6-8 will be removed. Upon completion of the Gallipolis Dam in the Ohio River, Locks and Dams Nos. 9-11 will also be removed. Point Pleasant, Henderson Highway Toll Bridge, Point Pleasant, W. Va. 0.1 Horizontal 500 feet.
