LICKING RIVER

The Licking River rises in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, about 20 miles from the West Virginia State boundary. It flows in a northwesterly direction across the State and joins the Ohio River between the cities of Newport and Covington, Ky., opposite Cincinnati, Ohio (mile 470.2 below Pittsburgh, Pa.). The principal characteristics of the stream are: Length, about 320 miles; average slope below Farmers, Ky., about 1.2 feet per mile; drainage area, about 3,670 square miles; and maximum and minimum discharges at the mouth, about 83,000 and 5 cubic feet per second, respectively.

The river is navigable to the head of beneficial slackwater from the pool of Dam No. 37, Ohio River, a distance of 3 miles above the mouth. No navigation improvements are now in existence on this river.
