MUSKINGUM RIVER

[blocks in formation]

The Muskingum River is formed by the confluence of the Walhonding and Tuscarawas Rivers near Coshocton, Ohio. It flows in a southeasterly direction and empties into the Ohio River at Marietta, Ohio (172.2 miles below Pittsburgh, Pa.). The principal physical characteristics of the stream are: Length, about 110 miles; average slope, about 1.5 feet per mile; drainage area, 8,040 square miles; and maximum and minimum discharges at the mouth, about 300,000 and 400 cubic feet per second, respectively.

The existing navigation system consists of 11 locks and dams and 4 short lateral canals providing a navigable depth of 4.5 to 5.5 feet from Marietta to Dresden, Ohio, a distance of 91 miles. Available bridge clearances are shown in the mileage table. Pertinent data in connection with the lock and dam project are given on the following page.

The Scioto River rises in the north central part of the State of Ohio. It flows in a southeasterly direction to Columbus, Ohio, thence in a southerly direction and joins the Ohio River at Portsmouth, Ohio (mile 356.5 below Pittsburgh, Pa.). The principal characteristics of the stream are: Length, about 237 miles; average slope below Columbus, Ohio, about 1.7 feet per mile; drainage area, 6,510 square miles; and maximum and minimum discharges at the mouth, about 320,000 and 230 cubic feet per second, respectively.

The river is navigable to the head of beneficial slackwater from the pool of Dam No. 31, Ohio River, a distance of about 2,600 feet above the mouth. No navigation improvements are in existence on this stream.

TENNESSEE RIVER

The Tennessee River, which is formed by the junction of the Holston and French Broad Rivers in the east central part of Tennessee near Knoxville flows successively southwest, west, and north through parts of the States of Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky to empty into the Ohio River at Paducah, Ky. (934.5 miles below Pittsburgh, Pa.). The principal physical characteristics of the river are: Length, about 652 miles; total fall, about 500 feet, 134 feet of which occurs in the Muscle Shoals section extending from Florence, Ala., to the head of Browns Island; drainage area, 40,600 square miles; maximum discharge at the mouth, about 410,000 cubic feet per second; and minimum discharge at the mouth (due to storage in Wilson Dam Pool in 1925), about 3,500 cubic feet per second. The minimum discharge will be controlled by the operation of the Norris Dam and other storage dams when they are put in operation by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The existing project provides for a channel 9 feet deep at low water from the mouth to Knoxville, Tenn., a distance of 646.6 miles, to be obtained by the construction of low dams; provided, that under the provision of the Federal Water Power Act a high dam with locks may be substituted for any two or more low dams. The total number of low navigation dams now included in the project is 24 (exclusive of those already built under former projects and those eliminated by the construction of high navigation-power dams at the Gen. Joe Wheeler and Pickwick Landing sites). Available bridge clearances are shown in the mileage table. Pertinent data in connection with existing locks and dams are shown below:

4 Will be inundated upon completion of Gen. Joe Wheeler Dam.

Construction of lock 80 percent complete; Tennessee Valley Authority constructing dam.
Tentatively selected lift at normal pool during low water.

7 Depth over lower miter sill at low water.

The following navigable depths are available on the Tennessee River under existing conditions: Above Chattanooga (mile 464.1), about 1 foot at extreme low water, about 2 feet from December 15 to August 1, and 3 feet from January 1 to June 1; between Chattanooga and Riverton (mile 464.1 to 226.5), about 3 feet at 1931 low water; below Riverton, 5 feet is ordinarily available throughout the year except at Indian Creek and Big Bend Shoals, where, on account of rock bottom, the navigable depth is restricted to 4% feet. Six feet or more is available from December 15 to August 15. Existing projects provide short pools where greater navigable depths are continuously available.

Steamboat navigation has, in the past, been carried on for a short distance above the mouth on major tributaries, while flatboating and rafting is possible for considerable distances up the Powell, Clinch, Holston, North Fork Holston, South Fork Holston, Watauga, Elk, and Duck Rivers.
