Excellent source for info on Gold Rush San Francisco. This book is a fairly comprehensive review of the historical highlights between 1845-1855. Written by residents of the city at the actual time of the recorded events, it's the best reference I can find of its kind. Not written by historians, I found it more interesting and entertaining than most scholarly works while still maintaining the same level of intellectual rigor as its drier counterparts. All said, if you asked me to recommend one book on the history of the origin of San Francisco, this is it.
