Colorado is the thirty-first state of the Union in point of population, having a total of 539,100 inhabitants, of whom 529,046, or 98 per cent, are white. Of this number 90,475, or 16.8 per cent, are foreign born. The percentage of illiteracy of the entire population is 4.2 per cent., the state ranking twelfth in this respect.
