Florida is the thirty-second state of the Union in point of population, having a total of 528,542 inhabitants, of whom 348,923, or 36.3 per cent, are white. Of this number 19,257, or 3.7 per cent, are foreign born. The percentage of illiteracy of the entire population is 21.9 per cent, the state ranking forty-first in this respect. The educational system of the state is as follows:
