Founded at Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pa. (now united with Washington College in Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pa.), in February, 1852. The idea of the fraternity was conceived at the time of an epidemic of typhoid fever in the college, when day after day those who were not prostrated by the disease sat at the bedsides of their afflicted friends, ministering to them. The warm friendships engendered in this trying time ripened into the fraternal sentiment which made the foundation of the fraternity possible. The badge of the fraternity is a shield of gold, displaying near its top an eye, on each side of which is a star; across the center of the shield are the fraternity letters and beneath is an antique lamp. The border is usually jeweled. The fraternity colors are pink and lavender. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION: The Shield of Phi Kappa Psi. Roll of active chapters: Chapter. .Ind. Beta. .Md. Alpha. .Pa. Alpha. .
