Alabama is the eighteenth state of the Union in point of population, having a total of 1,828,697 inhabitants, of whom 1,001,152, or 54.7 per cent, are white. Of this number, 14,060, or 7 per cent, are foreign born. The percentage of illiteracy of the entire population is 34 per cent, the state ranking forty-eighth in this respect.
