It is abundantly evident that, on the peace question, the clergy and ministers of the Gospel need to be further educated by the laity, and reminded of what are "the first principles of the oracles of God." In almost every place this need exists. And the friends of peace can scarcely render better aid to the cause they love than to devise and carry into effect additional means for influencing their neighbouring preachers on this question. By personal intercourse and conversation-by private correspondence and letters in the local journals, and by the distribution of literature embodying sound views and principles on the subject-much good may be done.

There can be little doubt but that if, during the difficulties with Egypt, the voice of the Churches had been raised to any considerable extent in the way of peaceful protest and suggestion, the Government would have been greatly strengthened to oppose that portion of the public who are always crying out for the exercise of a rash and overbearing policy of intimidation, or force. But the Church in general, has been silent; and the country is suffering and being led grievously astray, in consequence. The course of recent events furnishes a grave warning and a strong stimulus, in regard to the use of every practicable opportunity for exerting individual, as well as combined influence, to counteract such tendencies in the future, and to invite the alliance, in this direction, of Christian ministers in particular.
