. the Spirit of Knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord. Meekness; 1 Cor. iv. 21. fhall I come unto you in the Spirit of Meeknefs? Gal. vi. 1. if a Man be overtaken in a fault restore such an ore in the Spirit of Meekness. Grace; Zech.xii.10.-I will pour upon the houfe of David-the Spirit of Grace. Truth; 17o. iv. 6. Hereby know we the Spirit of Truth. - VIII. Sometimes both the SUPERIOR and INFERIOR FACULTIES of the Mind, or Man, are joined together, and reprefented by the fame Words promifcuously; As in Pfal. cxliii. 3. fecuted my Soul. 4. the enemy hath pertherefore is my Spirit overwhelmed - 6. -my Soul thirfteth after thee.-7. my Spirit faileth. 8.—I lift up my Soul unto thee. - 12. destroy all them that afHlict my Soul. Luke i. 46,47. my Soul doth magnify the Lord, and my Spirit hath rejoyced. 1Theff.v. 23. 23.—I God pray whole Spirit, and Soul, and Body be preserved blameless. Heb. iv. 12. the word of God is quick your piercing even to the dividing afunder of Soul and Spirit:which takes in what is termed both the fenfitive and rational Soul. v. Peirce in Heb. iv.12. In these feveral Senfes do the Words above, and fome others usually substituted for them, (fuch as Cor, præcordia, 3 jecur, brenes, y vifcera, nagdia, Jupos, vas, Den, ☛λαα, with their derivatives and compounds) occur in Holy Scripture: and in many places they are figuratively applied to the Deity. -- The words and ftand often alfo πνευμα IX. For the HOLY GHOST and his Gifts; and X. For good and evil ANGELS; as may be seen in any Concordance or Lexicon. But neither do these Words, nor any other, fo far as I can find, ever ftand for a purely immaterial Principle in Man, or a Subftance (whatever fome may imagine they mean by that Word) wholly feparable from and independent of the Body; as may perhaps appear more fully, when we examine the Paffages ufually cited for that purpose. I proceed, in the next place, to confider what account the Scriptures give of that State to which Death reduces us. And this we find represented by Sleep; by a negation of all Life, Thought, or Action; by Reft or Home; Silence, Oblivion, Deftruction, or Corruption. I. SLEEP. . First, In the case of good men. Deut. xxxi. 16. the Lord faid unto Mofes, Behold, thou shalt fleep with thy fathers. 1 Kings i. 21.when my lord the king fhall fleep with his fathers ii. 10. So David flept with his fathers. xi. 43. Solomon. Afa. xxii. 50. Jehoshaphat. 2 Kings xv.7.-Azariah. Jotham, .38. So 2 Chron. ix. 31. xiv. 1. xvi. 1. xxi, 13. xxvi. 23. xxvii. 9. xxxii. 33. xv. 24. Job iii.13. For now should I have lien ftill and been quiet, I fhould have flept; then had I been at reft; 14. with Kings and Counsellors of the earth. vii. 21. Why doft thou not pardon my tranfgreffion? for now fhall I fleep in the duft. xiv. 11, 12. As the waters fail from the fea, and the the flood decayeth and drieth up; fo man lieth down and rifeth not, till the heavens be no more; they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their Sleep. [v. I fhall be fatisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. Matt. xxvii. the graves were opened, and many bodies of Saints that flept, arofe. Jo. xi. 11.—our friend Lazarus Meepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of Sleep. 13.-Jefus fpake of his Death. Acts vii. 60. He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this Sin to their charge. And when he had faid this, he fell asleep. xiii.36.David, after he had ferved his own generation by the will of God, fell on Sleep, and was laid unto his fathers. I Cor. xv. 6. He was feen of above five hundred brethren at once: of whom the greater part remain but fome are fallen asleep. 18. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Chrift, are perished. - 20. now is Chrift become the first-fruits of them that flept. -51.we shall not all fleep, but we fhall all be changed. 1 Theff.iv.13.-I would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that are afleep.-14. them which fleep in Jefus, will God bring with him. -15.- we which are alive fhall not prevent them that are asleep. v. 10. who died for us, that whether we wake or fleep, we should live together with him. 2 Pet. iii. 4.fince the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were. - Secondly, In the cafe of bad Men. 1K. xiv. 20. Pf. lxxvi. 5. The ftout-hearted are spoiled, they have flept their Sleep. Jer.li.39.- I will make them drunken, that they may fleep a perpetual Sleep, and not wake. 1 Cor. xi.30. For this caufe many are weak and fickly among you, and many fleep. - Thirdly, in the cafe of all men. Dan.xii. 2. Many of them that fleep in the Duft of the Earth fhall awake, fome to everlasting Life, &c. Compare Job. v. 28, 29. the Hour is coming, in the which all that are in their Graves hall hear his Voice, and fhall come forth; they that have done Good, unto the Refurrection of Life, &c. II. Death is reprefented by a negation of all LIFE, THOUGHT, or ACTION, even to good Men. Job iii. 11. Why died I not from the Womb? 13. for now fhould I have lien ftill. - 16. as an hidden untimely Birth I had not been; as Infants which never faw Light. xiv. 10. Man dieth and where is be? 14. If a Man die, shall he live again? [v. Chappelow on y.12.] Pf.vi. 5.—in Death there is no remembrance of thee. xxx. 9. What profit is there in my Blood, when I go down to the Pit? fhall the Duft praise thee? fhall it declare thy Truth? lxxxviii. 10,11,12. Wilt thou fhew wonders to the Dead? fhall the A a Dead Dead arife and praise thee? fhall thy lovingkindness be declared in the Grave? or thy faithfulness in Destruction? fhall thy wonders be known in the Dark? and thy righteousness in the Land of Forgetfulness? cxv.17. The Dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into Silence. cxviii.17. I fhall not die, but live, and declare the Works of the Lord. cxlvi. 4. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his Earth; in that very day his Thoughts perish. Ecclef.ix. 5.- the Dead know not any thing. 6. their love, and their hatred, and their envy is now perished. there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the Grave, whither thou goeft. If.xxxviii. 18. the Grave cannot praise thee, Death cannot celebrate thee: they that go down into the Pit cannot hope for thy truth. 19. The living, he fhall praise thee, as I do this day. Acts ii.34.-David is not afcended into the Heavens, &c. 10. - the III. Death is reprefented as a REST, a HOME. Job iii. 11.Why died I not?-13. then had I been at Reft.-17.- there the weary be at Reft. -18. there the Prisoners reft together; they hear not the Voice of the Oppreffor. xvii. 13.
