The very imperfect manner in which this great subject is treated, will call for your indulgence: the subject itself will be, I trust, your glory and joy for time and in eternity. PREFACE. MANY elaborate and valuable treatises have appeared in support of the Christian doctrine of the Atonement. In several of these works, their authors evince great ability, erudition, and piety. The writer of this Essay, however, has not seen any small, cheap, popular tract, on this important subject: such a tract he is desirous to furnish. If a sentence should occasionally occur, which the most illiterate will not be able readily to understand, he hopes this will be but rarely the case; no words have been allowed but such as are familiar to an English ear, except where judged imperiously necessary, and the greater part of these are placed as notes at the foot of the page, that the generality of readers may not be interrupted by their occurrence. |
