THE DOCTRINE OF PURGATORY AND THE PRACTICE OF PRAYING FOR THE DEAD, as maintained by the Romish Church, examined. By the Rev. WILLIAM JOHN HALL, M.A., Rector of St. Bene't and St. Peter. London. Wix, 1843. THIS is a work of much ability, of great erudition, and last in order, but not least in excellence, of peculiarly clear arrangement. Mr. Hall begins by stating, in the most explicit and circumstantial manner, the doctrine against which he purposes to contend; he then examines the Scriptural authorities which are cited in its favour, and further proceeds to investigate, to analyze, and to condense the Scriptural evidences against it. Having established his case, as far as the oracles of God are concerned, he next institutes a scrutiny into the patristical authorities which are alleged in support of Purgatory-not contenting himself with quotations made by proxy, and refutations adopted at second-hand, but exhibiting, in every instance, a distinct reference to an authorized and accredited edition of his author. He then proceeds to consider, with equal minuteness, and with equal ability, the subject of "Prayer for the dead; "the origin of the practice itself; and the motives which may be reasonably imputed to the Church of Rome for her strenuous and determined endeavours to uphold it. Some excellent remarks are then added, on the state of the soul after death; and our author concludes, most appropriately and most effectively, by stating the true doctrine of Scripture, from the Homilies of the Church of England. |
