laid His hand upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And He went round about the villages, teaching.

He called unto Him the Twelve, and began to send them forth; and gave them power over unclean spirits. And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse; shod with sandals; and not having two coats. And He said unto them: In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. And whosoever shall not receive you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them.

And king Herod heard of Him; and he said, that John the Baptist was risen from the dead. For Herod had laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her, and John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told Him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And He said unto them: Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile. And they departed into a desert place by boat privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew Him, and ran afoot thither out of all towns, and outwent them, and came together unto Him. And Jesus, when He came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them. And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came unto Him, and said: This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed. Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them: Give ye them to eat. And they say unto Him: Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith unto them: How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. And He commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided

He among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. And straightway He constrained His disciples to get into the boat, and to go to the other side unto Bethsaida, while He sent away the people. And when He had sent them away, He departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He alone on the land. And He saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night He cometh unto them, walking upon the sea. But when they saw Him they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out. And He saith unto them: Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And He went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

And the Pharisees began to question with Him, seeking of Him a sign from heaven, tempting Him. And He sighed deeply in His spirit, and saith: Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. And He charged His disciples, saying: Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

Jesus went out, and His disciples, into the villages of Cæsarea Philippi: and by the way He asked His disciples, saying unto them: Whom do men say that I am? And they answered, John the Baptist: but some Elijah; and others, One of the prophets. And He saith unto them: But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto Him, Thou art the Christ. And He charged them that they should tell no man of Him. And He began to teach them, that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them: Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and for the Gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a

man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed, when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.

He said unto them: Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and He was transfigured before them. And His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow. And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus: Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. And there came a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son: hear Him. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves. And as they came down from the mountain, He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of Man were risen from the dead.

And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude. And all the people when they beheld Him, running to Him saluted Him. And one of the multitude said: Master, I have brought unto Thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit: and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to Thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He answereth him and saith: O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto Me. And they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And Jesus rebuked the foul spirit. And the spirit came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

And they passed through Galilee; and Jesus taught His disciples, and said unto them: The Son of Man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill Him; and after that He is killed, He shall rise the third day. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask Him.

Jesus, sitting down, called the Twelve and saith unto them: If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all. And He took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when He had taken him in His arms, He said unto them: Whosoever shall receive one of such children in My name, receiveth Me: and whosoever shall receive Me, receiveth not Me, but Him that sent Me. And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in Me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

Jesus said: Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them: Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

There came one running, and kneeled to Him, and asked Him: Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him: Why callest thou Me good? there is none good but one, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto Him: Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him: One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in

heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow Me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto His disciples: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? And Jesus saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. Then Peter began to say unto Him: Lo, we have left all, and have followed Thee. And Jesus answered and said: Verily I say unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake, and the Gospel's, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, and in the world to come eternal life; but many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

They were in the way going up to Jerusalem. And He took again the Twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto Him, saying: Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn Him to death, and shall deliver Him to the Gentiles: and they shall mock Him, and shall scourge Him, and shall spit upon Him, and shall kill Him: and the third day He shall rise again.

Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister. And whosoever of you shall be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of Man came to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.

And as He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimæus sat by the highwayside begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say: Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal: Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called, and said unto bim: What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto Him: Lord, that I might receive my sight. Ard
