TO THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW-YORK. The Trustees of the State Library respectfully

REPORT:

That the progress of the State Library during the past year will be seen by the catalogues accompanying this report. Additions have been made to the Law and the Miscellaneous collections, to the full extent of the means placed in the hands of the Trustees, and in many instances under the most favorable circumstances. A large number of books of value and comparative rarity have been purchased at auction sales, both in this country and. abroad.

The donations to the library during the year 1851 have, however, equalled, if not exceeded in value, the annual amount granted by the State. A brief notice of these is due to the liberality of the givers.

From his Majesty, the King of the Two Sicilies, has been received a copy of the long known and valued Flora Napolitana, being a description, with plates accompanying, of the plants native to the kingdom of Naples, in six volumes folio.

From his Majesty, the King of the Netherlands, and his government, at the request of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands, the Trustees have received a copy of the magnificent work of Prof. Blume, in four volumes folio, being a description of the plants found in the East Indies, with numerous engravings. The Royal Institute has also forwarded nearly a complete series of its Transactions and miscellaneous publications.
