The average earnings of 952 males 18 years of age or over included in the foregoing table, are $569 per annum-3.7 per cent earning under $200, 31 per cent under $400, 61.6 per cent under $600, and 92.6 per cent under $1,000. The group of foreign-born shows a larger proportion than the native-born of foreign father, which in turn shows a larger proportion than the native-born of native father, earning each specified amount-the average yearly earnings consequently being lowest for the foreign-born and highest for the nativeborn of native father. Of the several foreign-born races, the Poles and Slovaks report the lowest average earnings-none of these earning as high as $1,000, as compared with over 10 per cent of the English and over 5 per cent of each other race, except the French Canadian, and 10 per cent earning under $200, as compared with less than 2 per cent of each other race.

Of 329 females 18 years of age or over working for wages in Community A, the larger proportion earn $200 or more per year, and 87.5 per cent earn under $500. Of the different nativity groups, the native whites born of native father show the smallest proportion earning under each specified amount and the foreign-born the largest. Of the different foreign-born races the Slovaks show the largest proportion earning under each amount.

ANNUAL FAMILY INCOME.

In the series of tables next presented the yearly income of the families studied, together with the several sources of family income and their relative importance, are considered. The first table submitted in this connection shows, by general nativity and race of head of family, the percentage of families having a total yearly income of each specified amount.

Of 714 families reporting, 51.8 per cent have yearly incomes of less than $750, while 28 per cent have a total yearly income of $1,000 or more, and 9.8 per cent $1,500 or more. In the different nativity groups it is seen that the families the heads of which are native-born of native father show the smallest proportions with yearly incomes under each specified amount, and those whose heads are foreign-born the largest.

Of the families whose heads are of the different foreign-born races, those whose heads are Irish show the smallest proportion with incomes under each specified amounts of the higher groups, while the Poles show the largest.

WIVES AT WORK.

The disposition on the part of wives to engage in occupations outside the home in order to supplement the earnings of their husbands is indicated by the following table. This table shows, by general nativity and race of head of family, the proportion of wives at work.

TABLE 64.-Wives at work, by general nativity and race of head of family.

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][subsumed][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][subsumed][subsumed][merged small][merged small][merged small][subsumed][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][subsumed][merged small][merged small][subsumed][merged small][subsumed][merged small][merged small][merged small]

Of 701 wives reporting in the above table, 9 per cent are at work. The largest proportion of wives at work is shown in the families whose heads are foreign-born and the smallest by those of families whose heads are native-born of native father.

A much larger proportion of the wives of families whose heads are Slovaks and Poles are employed than of those the heads of which are of other races.

RELATION BETWEEN THE EARNINGS OF HUSBANDS AND THE PRACTICE OF WIVES IN KEEPING BOARDERS OR LODGERS.

It has been seen that only a small proportion of the wives in the families studied were regularly employed for wages outside the home. On the other hand, a considerable proportion of the wives supplement the earnings of the heads by keeping boarders or lodgers. The extent to which this is done is indicated by the following tables, which show, by yearly earnings of husbands and by general nativity and race of head of family, the number and percentage of families in which wife has employment or keeps boarders or lodgers.
