Washington, October 7, 1901. GENERAL: I have the honor to report that during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1901, I have been on duty in this office in charge of the regular-supplies branch, and pertaining to the work of which branch I respectfully submit the following report:

REGULAR SUPPLIES.

This branch has charge of all matters relating to the procurement and distribution of supplies, stoves, and heating apparatus, and repair and maintenance of same, for heating barracks and quarters; of ranges, stoves, and apparatus for cooking; of fuel and lights for enlisted men, guards, hospitals, storehouses, and officers; of equip ment of bakehouses to carry on post bakeries; of the necessary furniture, text-books, paper, and equipments for the post schools; of the tableware and mess furniture for kitchens and mess halls for enlisted men; of forage and bedding for the public animals of the Quartermaster's Department, and for the authorized number of officers' horses; of straw for soldiers' bedding; of stationery and blank books for the Quartermaster's Department, certificates for discharged soldiers, and blank forms for the Paymaster's and Quartermaster's departments; the purchase of cavalry and artillery horses, mules, harness, wagons, ambulances, etc., and all matters pertaining to wagon transportation of the Army, and of all the necessary correspondence connected with the work of this branch.

This branch has charge, also, of matters relating to all contracts to which the Quartermaster's Department is a party.

CONTRACTS.

During fiscal year ended June 30, 1901, 1,869 contracts were received, examined, and filed in this office. Six hundred and seventy
