(STUDY OF EMPLOYEES.)

[This table includes only races with 80 or more males reporting in each of two or more localities. The totals, however, are for all races.]

a Not computed, owing to small number involved."

No uniformity, such as appears in the table last discussed, is evident here, the localities ranking differently according to the race under consideration. The American whites have a larger proportion in Chicago than in Kansas City or Omaha, earning at least $2 a day, whereas the native-born negroes report their greatest proportion so paid in Omaha.

Among the native-born of foreign father, the largest proportion receiving as much as $2 a day are in Kansas City for the Germans and Irish, and in Omaha for the Austro-Hungarians. As regards the foreign-born males receiving this amount, Chicago has larger per cents than have the other localities of Bohemians and Moravians, Croatians, and Swedes. Kansas City has larger per cents of Germans, Irish, Russians, Slovaks, and Slovenians, and Omaha has larger per cents of Lithuanians and Poles.

The per cent of younger male employees-those 14 and under 18 years of age-earning each specified amount per day is shown in the next table, by general nativity and race.

*This table shows wages or earnings for the period indicated, but no account is taken of voluntary lost time or lost time from shutdowns or other causes. In the various tables in this report showing annual earnings allowance is made for time lost during the year.

The males reporting in this table are largely native-born, 78.6 per cent of the whole number being so reported. Of the 1,370 males for whom data were secured, 92.6 per cent earned $1 or more per day, 75.5 per cent earned $1.25 or more, 54.3 per cent earned $1.50 or more, 24.9 per cent earned at least $1.75, and 9.9 per cent earned as much as $2 per day. Negroes native-born of native father show the highest per cent earning $1 or over per day, followed in the order mentioned by foreign-born, native-born whites of native father, and nativeborn of foreign father. The same order continues throughout the table, with the exception of the last column, indicating a tendency on the part of the negroes in question to enter the better paying occupations at an earlier age than do the whites, whether native or foreign born.

Of the males of the second generation those of Austro-Hungarian parentage show the highest per cent earning $1 or over per day, the Russian, German, and Irish following in the order mentioned. Males of Austro-Hungarian descent also show the largest proportion, those of Irish the lowest, earning at least $1.25 per day. The Austro-Hungarians continue to show the largest per cents throughout the table, males of German descent showing the smallest proportions in the wage groups of $1.50 and up.

Of the two foreign-born races reporting sufficient numbers for tabulation the Croatians make the most creditable showing.

The wages per day received by the female employees in this industry are next shown, the first table and its accompanying charts giving the returns from practically 2,000 women 18 years of age or over, according to general nativity and race.
