Faith is the grace by which we stand,
When foes beset our way;

'Tis quick to learn the Lord's command, And eager to obey.

The world it conquers, works by love, And purifies the soul;

These holy fruits will amply prove,

That Christ has made us whole.

By faith we see, and walk, and live,
From sin and bondage freed;
By faith we know the Lord will give,
All that his children need.

By faith the tempter we repel,
The pow'rs of hell defy;
And Satan's fiery darts can quell,
While we on Christ rely.

Faith, the last enemy can meet,
Nor harm, nor evil fear
;

Our Father's will in death is sweet,

For glory then is near.

HYMN LXXVI.

Worthy the Lamb.

COME, let us join our cheerful songs, With angels round the throne;

Ten thousand thousand are their tongues But all their joys are one.

Worthy the Lamb that died, they cry,
To be exalted thus!

Worthy the Lamb, our hearts reply,
For he was slain for us!

Jesus is worthy to receive,
Honour and pow'r divine;
And blessings more than we can give,
Be, Lord, for ever thine!

The whole creation join in one,
To bless the sacred name
Of him that sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

HYMN LXXVII.

Prayer for Christ's guidance.

GUIDE me, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven!

Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing streams do flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar,

Lead me all my journey through:
Strong Deliv❜rer!

Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of deaths, and hell's Destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side:

Songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee.

HYMN LXXVIII.

Ebenezer.

COME, thou fount of ev'ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount-0, fix us on it,
Mount of God's unchanging love!
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Hither by thine help I'm come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand'ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interpos'd his precious blood.
O! to grace how great a debtor,
Daily I'm constrain'd to be!
Let thy grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wand'ring heart to thee.

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,

Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it from thy courts above.

HYMN LXXIX.

A good hope.

THE hope, which men on creatures place,
Is treach'rous and will fail ;
But that which rests on Jesus' grace,
Shall flourish and prevail.

When Christ is made our righteousness,
Our strength and only stay,
Our hope is full of joy and peace,
Which none can take away.

The Christian's hope, if good and sound,
Shall ever be maintain'd;

And holy fruits through grace abound,
For God has so ordain'd.

'Tis fix'd on Christ, th' Eternal Rock,
And never shall remove;
'Tis proof against the rudest shock,
Through his unchanging love.

HYMN LXXX.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
WHO are the friends of Jesus here,
And make their love to him appear?

They, who with cheerful heart and hands, Will do whate'er the Lord commands.

The Lord's commands are just and good,
And sweet to souls by grace renew'd :
'Tis their obedience to his laws,
That shews them friendly to his cause.

Helpless themselves, their gracious Lord
Will every needful aid afford;

And when in Jesus' strength they go,
All duties they with ease can do.

Then let us rise in Jesus' name,
His arm our stay, his praise our aim ;
Let unreserv'd obedience prove,
The truth and ardor of our love.

HYMN LXXXI.

Good works well pleasing to God thro' Jesus Christ. THE Sov'reign of the earth and skies, Glorious in holiness and might,

Deigns to accept our sacrifice,

And views our off'rings with delight.

Through Christ our grateful songs will please,
Our acts of mercy, kindness, love;
No costly rites can equal these,

In his regard, who reigns above.
