Thy footsteps, Lord, with joy we trace,
And mark the conquests of thy grace:
Finish the work thou hast begun ;
And let thy will on earth be done.
Then shall contending nations rest,
For love shall reign in every breast;
Weapons, for war design'd shall cease,
Or then be implements of peace.
Hark! how the hosts triumphant sing!
"The Lord omnipotent is King!"
Let all his saints rejoice at this,
The kingdoms of the world are his.

Hallelujah! Amen!

GREAT God of hosts, attend our pray❜r,
And make the British isles thy care:
To thee we raise our suppliant cries,
When angry nations round us rise.
Fain would they tread our glory down,
And in the dust defile our crown,
Deluge our houses with our blood,
And burn the temples of our God.
But 'midst the thunder of their rage,
We thy protection would engage;
O raise thy saving arm on high,
And bring renew'd deliverance nigh.

May Britain, as one man be led
To make the Lord her fear and dread;
Our souls no other fear shall know,
Though earth were leagued with hell below.

Now he records our humble tears,
With ardent vows for future years;
And destines for approaching days
Victorious shouts and songs of praise.
Emmanuel's land shall safe remain,
Blest with its Saviour's gentle reign,
Till every hostile rumour cease,
In the fair realm of perfect peace.

HYMN CXXVI.

The same.

SEE, gracious God! before thy throne,
Thy mourning people bend!
'Tis on thy sov'reign grace alone,
Our humble hopes depend.

Tremendous judgments from thy hand
Thy dreadful pow'r display;
Yet mercy spares this guilty land,
And still we live to pray.

Great God, and why is Britain spar'd,
Ungrateful as we are!

O make thine awful warnings heard,
While mercy cries" Forbear."

What num'rous crimes increasing rise
Through this apostate isle!
What land so favor'd of the skies,
And yet what land so vile!

O turn us, turn us, mighty Lord,
By thy constraining grace;
Then shall our hearts obey thy word,
And humbly seek thy face.
Then should insulting foes invade,
We need not yield to fear;
Secure of never-failing aid,
If God, our God, is near.

HYMN CXXVII.

Sacrament.

NOT all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

But Christ the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.
My faith would lay her hand,
Oh that dear head of thine;
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

My soul looks back to see,
The burdens thou didst bear,
When hanging on the cursed tree,
And hopes her guilt was there.

Believing, we rejoice,

To see the curse remove;

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love.

HYMN CXXVIII.

The same.

THOU very paschal Lamb, Whose blood for us was shed; Through whom we out of Egypt came, Thy ransom'd people lead.

Angel of gospel grace,

Fulfil thy character;

To guard and feed thy chosen race,
In Israel's camp appear.

Throughout the desert way
Conduct us by thy light;
Be thou a cooling cloud by day,
A cheering fire by night.
Our fainting souls sustain
With blessings from above;
And ever on thy people rain
The manna of thy love.

HYMN CXXIX.

The same.

"TWAS on that dark, that doleful night,
When pow'rs of earth and hell arose
Against the Son of God's delight,
And friends betray'd him to his foes:
Before the mournful scene began,

He took the bread, and bless'd, and brake;
What love through all his actions ran!
What wond'rous words of grace he spake!
"This is my body, broke for sin,

"Receive and eat the living food: " Then took the cup, and bless'd the wine ""Tis the new cov❜nant in my blood." "Do this," he cried, "till time shall end, "In memory of your dying friend; "Meet at my table, and record,

"The love of your departed Lord." Jesus, thy feast we celebrate,

We shew thy death, we sing thy name,
Till thou return and we shall eat,
The marriage supper of the Lamb.

HYMN CXXX.

The same.

FAITHFUL bridegroom, Holy Lamb,
By the church belov'd;

Manifest thy sweetest name
To each heart approv'd.
