Command thy blessing, Jesus, Lord,
May we thy true disciples be;
Speak to each heart the mighty word,
Say to the weakest, "Follow me."

Command thy blessing, in this hour,
Spirit of truth! and fill this place,
With humbling and exalting pow'r,
With quickening and confirming grace.

O thou, our Maker, Saviour, Guide!
One true, eternal God confest;
May nought in life or death divide
The saints in thy communion blest.

HYMN VI.

The same.

HOLY Spirit, heav'nly dove,
Breathe upon us from above,
And with sweet, celestial fire,
Zeal inflame and love inspire.

On this congregation pour,
Heav'nly blessings like a shower;
Streams of grace upon us shed;
Teach the living, raise the dead.

Bid each groundless doubt depart;
Sanctify each carnal heart;
Rouse the careless, cheer the faint;
Feed and comfort ev'ry saint.

Every soul do thou engage;
Every Christian's grief assuage;
Be our counsellor and guide;
Lead to Jesus crucified.

HYMN VI.

The same.

LORD, in the temples of thy grace,
Thy saints behold thy smiling face;
And we have seen thy glory shine,
With pow'r and majesty divine.
Return, O Lord, our spirits cry,
Our graces droop, our comforts die;
Return, and let thy glories rise,
Again to our admiring eyes.

Till fill'd with light, and joy, and love,
Thy courts below, like those above,
Triumphant hallelujabs raise,

Till heav'n and earth resound thy praise.

HYMN VIII.

The Influence of the Holy Spirit desired. Rom. xv. 13.*
GREAT Spirit! by whose mighty pow'r,
All creatures live and move;
On us thy benediction shower,
Inspire our souls with love."

Hail, Source of light! arise and shine,
Darkness and doubt dispel;

Give peace and joy, for we are thine;
In us for ever dwell.

From death to life our spirits raise,
Complete redemption bring;

New tongues impart, to speak the praise
Of Christ, our God, and King.

Thine inward witness bear, unknown
To all the world beside;
Exulting then, we know and own,
Our Jesus glorified.

HYMN IX.

Imploring divine Influence.

MY God, whene'er my longing heart
The praiseful tribute would impart,
In vain my tongue with feeble aim,
Attempts the glories of thy name.

In vain my boldest thoughts arise,
I sink to earth and lose the skies;
Yet I may still thy grace implore,
And low in dust thy name adore.

With humble fear let love unite,
And mix devotion with delight;
Then shall thy name be all my joy,
Thy praise my constant, blest employ.

O let thy grace guide every song,
And fill my heart, and tune my tongue;
Then shall the strain harmonious flow,
And heav'n's sweet work begin below.

HYMN X.

For the Spirit to help our infirmilies.

COME, Holy Spirit! heav'nly Dove!
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs,
Kindle the flame of sacred love,
In these cold hearts of ours.
Look how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys:

How backward, and at best, how slow,
To gain eternal joys.

In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise,
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

Dear Lord, and shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate,

Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

[ocr errors]

Come, Holy Spirit! Heav'nly Dove!
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN XI.

The Holy Spirit, the Witness. Rom. viii. 16. HOLY Spirit, heav'nly Witness, Whose Almighty influence darts Life to souls once dead, and fitness For the heavenly state imparts; Bear thy witness,

To thy work in all our hearts.

Witness to our souls of Jesus,

Let us now his grace

record;

Thou, and thou alone, canst ease us;
Shed the Saviour's love abroad,
And bear witness,

That we are the sons of God.

Witness ev'ry frame and feeling,
Every want and every woe;
And the blood of Christ for healing,
On our helpless souls bestow:
Holy Witness,

Let us cov❜nant blessings know.
Witness in us, for us, by us,
With thine agency divine;
Nor in that great day deny us,
When the saints in glory shine;

Then bear witness

Of our souls, that they are thine.

HYMN XII.

Prayer for a well-grounded hope of Salvation. ETERNAL Spirit! Source of Truth! Our contrite hearts inspire; Kindle the flame of heav'nly love, And feed the pure desire.

'Tis thine to soothe the sorrowing soul, With Satan's yoke oppress'd;

'Tis thine to bid the dying live, And give the weary rest.
