The raging waves behold and fear,
To see thy great salvation near;
And rise, as swelling mountains high,
To make the path of Israel dry.
Protected by that mighty name,

From which the cov'nant mercies came,
They walk obedient to thy word,
And call Jehovah, Jesus-Lord.

HYMN XXV.

Israel's Deliverance. Isa. lii. 7.

ON the mountain's top appearing,
Lo! the sacred herald stands,
Welcome news to Zion bearing,
Zion, long in hostile lands:
Mourning captive!

God himself shall loose thy bands.
Lo! thy sun is risen in glory,

God himself appears thy friend,
All thy foes shall flee before thee,
Here their boasted triumphs end;
Great deliverance

Zion's King vouchsafes to send.
Enemies no more shall trouble,
All thy warfare now is past,
For thy shame thou shalt have double,
Days of peace are come at last;
All thy conflicts
End in everlasting rest.

HYMN XXVI.

The same.

DAUGHTER of Zion, from the dust

Exalt thy fallen head,

Again in thy Redeemer trust,

He calls thee from the dead.

Awake, awake, put on thy strength,
Thy beautiful array,

The day of freedom dawns at length,
The Lord's appointed day.
Rebuild thy walls, thy

And send thy sumunds enlarge,

Say to the South, "Give up thy charge, And keep not back, O North!'

They come, they come, the exil'd bands!
Where'er they rest or roam,

They hear thy voice in stranger lands,
And hasten to their home,

Thus when this universe shall burn,
And God his works destroy,
With songs the ransom'd shall return,
And everlasting joy.

HYMN XXVII.

The latter day glory.

BEHOLD, the temple of the Lord,

In latter days shall rise,

Above the mountains and the hills,
And draw our wond'ring eyes.

To this the joyful nations round,
All lands and tongues shall flow:
Up to the hill of God," they'll cry,
"And to his house we'll go.'

The beam that shines on Zion's hill,
Shall lighten ev'ry land;

The King who reigns in Zion's tow'rs,
Shall the whole world command.

No strife shall wound Messiah's reign,
Or mar the peaceful years;

To plough-shares now they beat their swords,
To pruning-hooks their spears.
No longer hosts encount'ring hosts,
Their millions slain deplore;
The clanging trumpet silent hangs,
The war note sounds no more!

Come then, O come, from ev'ry land,.
To worship at his shrine;
And, walking in the light of God,
With peace and glory shine!

HYMN XXVIII.

The extension of the Church.

O'ER the gloomy hills of darkness,
Look, my soul, be still and gaze;
All the promises do travail,

With a glorious day of grace;
Blessed Jub'lee ;-

Let thy glorious morning dawn.

Let the Indian, let the Negro,
Let the rude barbarian see,
That divine and glorious conquest,
Once obtain'd on Calvary;
Let the gospel,

Loud resound from pole to pole.
Kingdoms wide, that sit in darkness !
Grant them, Lord, the glorious light;
And from eastern coast to western,
May the morning chase the night :
Chase the darkness-

From their long benighted eyes.
Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel,
Win and conquer, never cease,
So Immanuel's fair dominions,
Shall extend, and still increase;
Till the kingdoms-

Of the world are all his own.

HYMN XXIX.

Christ's second coming.

THE Lord shall come! the earth shall quake,
The mountains to their centre shake;
And withering from the vault of night
The stars shall pale their feeble light.
The Lord shall come! but not the same
As once in lowliness he came;
A silent Lamb before his foes,
A weary man, and full of woes.

The Lord shall come! a glorious form,
With rainbow, wreathe, and robes of storm;
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Appointed Judge of all mankind!

Can this be he who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
Oppress'd by pow'r, and mock'd by pride;
The Nazarene, the crucified?

While sinners in despair shall call,
"Rocks, hide us; mountains, on us fall!"
The saints, ascending from the tomb,
Shall joyful sing, "The Lord is come!"

X

HYMN XXX.

The same.

LO! he comes, with clouds descending,
Once for favor'd sinners slain !
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of his train :
Hallelujah!

Jesus comes, and comes to reign.

Every eye shall now behold him,
Rob'd in awful majesty!

Those who set at nought and sold him,
Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see!
