HYMN XXXVI.

The same.

WHEN blest with that transporting view,
That Jesus died for me,

For this sweet hope what praise is due,
O God of grace, to thee!
And may I hope that Christ is mine?
That source of every bliss,
That noblest gift of love divine-
What wondrous grace is this!
My highest praise, alas, how poor!
How cold my warmest love!
Great Saviour, teach me to adore,
As angels do above.

But frail mortality in vain

Attempts the blissful song;

The high, the vast, the boundless strain,
Claims an immortal tongue.

Lord, when this mortal frame decays,
And ev'ry weakness dies,
Complete the wonders of thy grace,
And raise me to the skies.

HYMN XXXVII.

The same.

O God, my heart is fixed, I will sing and give praise even with my glory. Psalm cvii. 1.

AWAKE, our souls! awake, our tongues! The subject is divine:

A Saviour's love demands our songs :
Let all his people join.

This Saviour is the mighty God,
Who fills the throne above:
Reveal'd in flesh he shed his blood,
And thus declar'd his love.

Jesus, thy love exceeds our thoughts,
But this we're given to see;
The soul that feels its pow'r is taught
To part with all for thee.

And though thy love be faintly seen,
What's seen demands our praise;
Without this view we still had been
Engag'd in folly's ways.

But when we lay this flesh aside,
And gain the realms of light,
Obscuring clouds no more shall hide
Thy glory from our sight.

Then to the praise of love divine,
We'll strike our golden lyres;
With heart and voice we'll sweetly join
The everlasting choirs.

HYMN XXXVIII.

The same.

GRATEFUL notes and numbers bring, While Jehovah's praise we sing :

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

Be thy glorious name ador'd!

Men on earth, and saints above,
Sing the great Redeemer's love:
Lord, thy mercies never fail ;
Hail, celestial goodness, hail!
Though unworthy of thine ear,
Still our hallelujahs hear!
Purer praise we hope to bring,
When with saints above we sing.

Lead us to that blissful state,
Where thou reign'st supremely great;
Look with pity from thy throne,
Send thy Holy Spirit down.

While on earth ordain'd to stay,
Guide our footsteps in the way;
Till we come to reign with thee,
And thy wondrous glory see!

HYMN XXXIX.

Invitation to praise. Matt. i. 21.

COME, let us all unite to praise
The Saviour of mankind;
Our thankful hearts, in solemn lays,
Be with our voices join'd.

But how shall dust his worth declare,
Which angels cannot scan;

The highest name that's nam'd, is far Beneath the Son of man.

Yet, Lord, we cannot silent be,
By love we are constrain'd,
To offer our best thanks to thee,
Our Saviour and our friend.

Should we through fear or shame refrain,
The very stones would sing,
And tell the universal reign,

Of our immortal King.

Let ev'ry tongue thy goodness shew,
And spread abroad thy fame;
Let ev'ry heart with praise o'erflow,
And bless thy wondrous name.

Worship and honor, thanks and love,
Be to our Jesus giv'n,
By men below, by saints above,
By all in earth and heav'n.

HYMN XL.

Praise for redemption. Rev. v. }}, 12.
HARK! the notes of angels singing-
"Glory, glory to the Lamb!
All in heav'n their tribute bringing,
Raising high the Saviour's name.

Ye, for whom his life is giv'n,
Sacred themes to you belong:
Come, assist the choir of heav'n,
Join the everlasting song.

Saints and angels thus united,
Songs imperfect still must raise ;
Though despis'd on earth, and slighted,
Jesus is above all praise.

See th' angelic hosts have crown'd him,
Jesus fills the throne on high;
Countless myriads, hov'ring round him,
With his praises fill the sky.

Fill'd with holy emulation,

Let us vie with those above;
Sweet the theme-a free salvation!
Fruit of everlasting love.

Endless life in him possessing,
Let us praise his precious name:
Glory, honour, pow'r and blessing,
Be for ever to the Lamb.

HYMN XLI.

Hymn to Jesus.

JESUS, in thy transporting name,
What blissful glories rise!
Jesus, the angels' sweetest theme!
The wonder of the skies!

Well might the skies with wonder view,
A love so strange as thine!

No thought of angels ever knew,
Compassion so divine!
