HYMN CXIII.

The same.

OTHOU, whose tender mercy hears,
Contrition's humble cry;

Whose hand indulgent wipes the tears,
From sorrow's weeping eye.

See, low before thy throne of grace,
We wretched wand'rers mourn;
Hast thou not bid us seek thy face,
Hast thou not said, " Return?"

And shall our guilty fears prevail,
To drive us from thy feet?
Thy word of promise cannot fail,
Our tow'r of safe retreat.

Absent from thee, our guide, our light,
Without one cheering ray,
Through dangers, fears, and gloomy night,
How desolate our way!

0 ! shine on each benighted heart,
With beams of mercy shine;
And let thy Spirit's aid impart,
A taste of joys divine.

Thy presence only can bestow,
Delights which never cloy;
Be this our solace here below,
And our eternal joy.

HYMN CXIV.

For the end of the year.

The barren fig tree. Luke xiii. 6.

SEE in the vineyard of the Lord
A barren fig-tree stand!

It yields no fruit, no blossom bears,
Though planted by his hand.
From year to year he seeks for fruit,
And still no fruit is found;
It stands among the living trees,
A cumb'rer of the ground.
But, lo! the gracious Saviour pleads,
"The barren fig-tree spare:
"In mercy stay the threat'ning hand,
"And grant another year.
"Perhaps some means of grace untried,
66 May reach the stony heart;
"Or the soft dews of heav'nly love
66 May heav'nly life impart.

"But if all means should prove in vain, "And still no fruit appear, "Then mercy may no longer plead, "Nor ask another year."

WHEN Israel's tribes, from Egypt freed,
Were brought to Canaan's land,
They circumcis'd their infant seed,
By a divine command.

The Jewish church did not neglect
This precept to obey;

And shall the Christian church reject,
And cast their babes away?
No, Lord, it is thy gracious will,
Children should be baptiz'd:
And we obey thy precepts still,
Although they are despis'd.
Accept th' obedience of our hands,
And bless our infant race;

And when we teach them thy commands,
O save them by thy grace.

HYMN CXVI.

The same.

COME, Holy Ghost, descend from high; Baptiser of our spirits, Thou!

The sacramental seal apply,

And witness with the water now.
Exert thy energy divine,

And sprinkle the atoning blood;
May Father, Son, and Spirit join,
To seal this child, a child of God.

HYMN CXVII.

The Lord's Supper. 1 Cor. x. 16.
IN blessed union here we meet,
We sit at the Redeemer's feet,
And eat the bread of heav'n;
