LAKE FISHING IN PALESTINE.

HE inference is hardly warrantable from Mark i. 16, 20, that the disciples Christ called to follow Him, who were fishermen by trade, from that time almost entirely renounced their occupation during the three or four years of His ministry. Bearing in mind the fact how frequently the Sun of righteousness, while He was on earth, shone upon that lake, variously named and small indeed, but of all earth's lakes the most sacred; we may be allowed to suppose that occasionally there were intervals when those apostles, accustomed to handle the net, employed themselves in that way for the benefit of their own families, or of those who might be in need. They could while thus toiling learn many a lesson from the Master's lips,or reflect to profit upon what they had already heard. The readiness with which several of the disciples went to this pursuit after the resurrection of Christ implies that they had not lost all familiarity with the craft to which they had probably been trained when lads.

The popular modern mode of fresh-water fishing by a rod and bait attached was known in early times, and turned to a profitable account both in fresh and salt water. This plan of angling would have suggested several hints to men who were afterwards to be engaged in the great work, often calling forth much patience as well as skill, of drawing others into the gospel kingdom. From Matt. xvii. 27 we have positive proof that fishing with a line was used at least in one instance by Peter, and it is not spoken of as if the proposal was a novel one. Ancient fishermen had occasionally lines with a series of hooks, such as are now used to catch eels and other fish. On the Sea of Galilee, as Mr. Wood observes, the fishermen at the time referred to did not use a rod, but they cast the hook, and the line has a weight fastened to it close to the hook, and then having baited the former, which is coiled round the arm of the fisherman, it is dexterously hurled by him a good distance out, and the hook allowed to sink as far as it will. After a moment's pause, both hook and line are pulled back towards them in a jerky manner, so as to induce the fish to follow. On a bite, of course the fisherman draws up rapidly, using the aid of a net to secure the prize.
