Van Berkel's Voyage is very interesting for the knowdledge of the manners and customs in South America, and illustrated with very fine plates; the first pl. or titelprint represents the fight of a man with a tiger.

The 2d work is not by the renowned Captain and traveller P. v. d. Broeck. See Tiele: pp. 236-241.

Highly creditable and very useful work by an eminent practical bookseller, who presented his country with this precious fruit of his long and useful labours.

The present parts contain no less than 9770 titles, nearly all with exact collations and a host of bibliographical and other notices.

Tiele (P. A.) Bibliotheek van Nederl. Pamfletten. Eerste afdeeling: Verzameling van Frederik Muller. Amst. 1858-61.3 vols. 4to. 15

(Library of Dutch Pamphlets. First part: Collection of Frederik Muller.) This valuable Bibliography, comprising the Dutch pamphlets, publ. in the years 1482-1702, contains not less than 9668 titles, chronologically arranged, with exact descriptions, bibliographical, and other notices, etc. For the American collector it is of high interest, as it contains not only all the pamphlets, mentioned in Asher's Essay, but many others, which though not directly treating of the Dutch American colonies are indispensable to the knowledge of the history of the Netherlands, in conjunction with that of the colonies.

Before the publication of this Catalogue of my collection by my young friend Mr. Tiele, now Librarian at the University of Leiden, the Dutch pamphlets were not at all valued, sold in large lots, etc.; by this catalogue the general attention was turned to them and their high interest was more and more appreciated.

Tiele (P.A.) 14.Dedicated to Jam. Lenox, Esqu.. of New-York, who furnished many valuable contributions to it from his rich Library.

A very useful and creditable book containing the exact bibliographical description, with valuable historical notes, of my very rare and curious collection of old Dutch voyages, formed with great expense and trouble during 17 years, and the first bibliography of old Dutch voyages. The original text of each voyage is conferred with the translations given by De Bry, amply showing the immense superiority of these originals in text, plates and maps, to the poor editions of De Bry, whose greatest merit consists in forming one single collection; the translations given by Hulsius are by far superior. The references: Tiele No... to many books in the present catalogue (for inst. at No. 7, Acosta etc.) refer to this bibliography.

A most valuable supplement to my Library of Pamphlets (No.108) going to the year 1713, and containing 9407 pamphlets not mentioned in my publication. Both works together give the astonishing number of 19077 pamphlets, (including all the various editions of one No.), published in the very small 7 United Provinces from 1500 to 1713. The collector of the pamphlets was Mr. Is. Meulman, (broker in Sugar at Amsterdam, deceased in 1868) who directed Mr. van der Wulp to compile this Catalogue. Privately printed, in 300 copies, never put into commerce, and only distributed to friends and libraries at home and abroad. - The collection itself, of 19106 pamphlets, including (with some very few exceptions) also all those collected by me, is now at the Library of the University of Gand (Belgium). Notwithstanding in the 6 vols. of both these collections of pamphlets 19077 publications are enumerated, I know that there is a vast number, perhaps 1000 pieces more, in various Dutch libraries not mentioned here. These volumes of Meulman are still more interesting to the American collector, than those publ. by Tiele, as they include not only many very rare tracts on America (for inst. the 8vo edition of Joh. Megapolensis' report on the Mohawk Indians, 1644 [No. 2702] but a great number of East and W. Indian voyages, inserted by Mr. Meulman into this collection, although not properly belonging to that class of publications.

This work is generally believed to be a second edition of No. 126, but on a close inspection it is a quite different book. The work of 1676 contains biographies of illustrious navigators of all nations, that of 1683 gives only those of Dutchmen, but in a more ample and extensive way, with addition of many lives not contained in the former edition, and accounts of all the principal Dutch naval achievements so that it may be called a general Naval history of the Netherlands. All the plates of the 1676 edition, relating to foreigners, are omitted, many others, by John Luiken, added. The importance of this work for America is considerable.
