Koddige Reisbeschrijving naar Darien, (12 Aug. 1681 till 25 Jan. 1682.) Contemporary Manuscript, copied by P. v. d. Schelling. 44 pp. fol. (Comical Voyage to Darien.)

40.

Under this title will be found here a very serious and interesting account of a Voyage in 1681 of a Dutch fleet to the gulf of Darien, the arrival at St. Pedro and the Capture of a Spanish ship; the exploits on the river St. Jago and the conquering of the city of Puna; arrival at and description of Truxillo (battle with the Spaniards); at Callao de Lima, Baldivia, Castro; description of Chili, Terra del Fuego and Staaten-land, etc.

This journal has, besides the exact description of the voyage and of the countries visited, a special interest for the history of the discovery of Terra del Fuego by Barthol. da Fonte, whose voyage to the North West of America so often has been disputed, and whose visit to Terra del Fuego should be fancied. Most probably we have here the copy of a journal sent to Burgomaster N. C. Witsen at Amsterdam, the great promoter of voyages, and collector of maps. In his Description of Tartary, Amst. 1705, still at present renowned for its exactitude, he says (pp. 170), to have with him the MS. of the Spanish mariner da Fonte, who in 1659 explored for the King of Spain, Tierra del Fuego. The same da Fonte was captured in the above quoted Spanish ship at S. Pedro and released in the bay of St. Augustin, going with 300 men to St. Jago. The relation of his adventures and his indications for the further voyage had struck the attention of the author of this journal, who begins thus: We sent You with this the charts of Barthol. da Fonte, a Portuguese Captain, whose history will please You, and what we understand of him, joined to our own observations, of the occurrences happened, all originals, etc.

VERY RARE AND INTERESTING. This cosmographic poem, little known, bas at the end 17 curious geographical maps, one of America, with the Strait of Magellanes, and named at the top: "Peru. Brevis exact. totius Novi Orbis ejusq. insulorum descriptio recens a Joan. Bellero edita." Besides these and the map of the World, there are maps of Sarmatia, Sarm. Moscovia, Brevis exactaque Moscoviae descriptio (large folding map), Hongrie, etc. etc. with a verset on each in the text.

The work is dedicated to "la royne Marie de Hongrie, etc."; l'epithalame, named on the title, is in Spanish verses at pp. 43-44.
