Indications of size are given in centimeter, French measure, and relate to the copperplate, without the margins.

1509 Schauplatz der Welt, oder Beschreibung der fürnemsten Länder, Nationen, Städten und Flüssen durch 52 Figuren in einem Carten-Spiel vorgestellet. Title and 52 plates on 18 broad sq. 4° leaves, each having 3 plates, the last only 2. Printed in Germany, probably at Augsburg, about 1730. 25.

In this very curious set Europe is represented by 13 spades, Africa by 13 bells (a former card-sign), Asia by 13 hearts and America by 13 acorns (also a former antique pip [spot]), divided in this order:

Pack of cards, like the foregoing, but not so complete. Only on those representing America occur the distinguishing signs or pips. Together 40 cards. lg. 12o. Mounted on 7 sheets. fol. 25.This set consists of: Europe: title and 1, 2, 5, 8; Asia: title and 1-10; Africa: title and 1-10; America: title, king, queen, knave and 1-10: the same fig., names and descriptions as of No 1509. These fine plates, engraved by a French artist, apparently about 1640, in the style of Callot, are the originals of the former set and of the highest rarity.

This very curious set consists of 60 cards, lg. 120, printed on 5 leaves
sq. 40, in the original condition, uncut and not yet divided. The set em-
braces: frontispiece, engraved title (Tabulae geographicae cet.), preface
of 2 pp. (announcing that playing at cards in this way is an invention

of the "celebrated P. Duval," that the clubs indicate America, spades Africa, hearts Europe and diamonds Asia), 4 maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The suit of clubs (America) is divided thus:

Part VIII Appendix 1606, and represented on plate VII. Original plate (the prototype of De Bry's) on two large square fol. sheets (each br. 52 cent., high 46 cent.), engrav. by C. Kick, with a Latin dedication to the Directors of the East Ind. Comp., by B. Lampe and G. Kick. 80.This plate is of the utmost rarity; during 25 years I have never met with another copy, neither saw it mentioned anywhere. Very fine copy in the best state of preservation. By the letters on the plate it seems that a Latin or Dutch explanation may belong to it, but the explanation of the engraving by De Bry exactly corresponds with this.
