had kept his word, he gives the gracious assurance, that he also would keep them from the approaching hour of temptation, until at length he made them pillars in the house of God above, and gave them a new name in his holy city.

HYMN

For Monday Morning.

The Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noon-day walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or in the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary, wandering, steps he leads;
Where peaceful rivers soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious, lonely, wilds I stray,
Thy bounty shall my wants beguile;
The barren wilderness shall smile
With sudden greens and herbage crown'd,
And streams shall murmur all around.

Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord! art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

PRAYER

For Monday Morning.

O thou Shepherd of Israel, who neither slumberest nor sleepest, graciously regard us who are now assembled together to thank thee for thy care over us through the darkness and dangers of the night; and to entreat thy protection, guidance, and blessing through the day to which thou hast mercifully brought us.

We acknowledge, O Lord, that we are altogether unworthy thy protection; and confess with shame and contrition, that we have all gone astray from thee like lost sheep, and have turned every one to his own way. Most justly mightest thou leave us to eat of the fruit thereof, and to be filled with our own devices, But we flee unto thee, thou good Shepherd, who hast given thy life for the sheep. Surely thou hast borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows. Thou

wast wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities; and the Lord hath laid upon thee the iniquity of us all. For thine own name's sake therefore, we beseech thee to have mercy upon us; and though we have been as sheep going astray, incline us to return unto thee, the Shepherd and the Bishop of our souls. We look up unto thee for guidance, preservation, and strength. Lead us in the paths of righteousness for thy name's sake. Keep us in the way in which we should go, and guide us with thine eye. Give unto us eternal life, and let us never perish; neither let any one pluck us out of thy hand.

Be thou, Lord, our Shepherd, and we shall not want. Let thy loving-kindness and mercy follow us all the days of our lives. And when we pass through the valley of the shadow of death, be thou still with us. Let thy rod and thy staff comfort and support us: and, at the last, graciously receive us into thy heavenly fold; there with thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, to give thee thanks for ever and ever.

O thou who feedest thy flock like a shepherd, guide and protect thy helpless sheep, scattered abroad through the wil

derness of this world. Mercifully guard them from those who lie in wait to deceive; and particularly from the great enemy of souls, who as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour; and let nothing separate them from thy everlasting love. Gather the lambs in thy arms, and carry them in thy bosom, and say unto them, "Fear not, little flock, it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." And grant that, as one fold under one shepherd, they may learn of thee, who art meek and lowly in heart, to dwell together in peace and love. These prayers, for ourselves and others, we humbly offer up to the throne of grace, in the name, and through the mediation of Jesus Christ our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

HYMN

For Monday Evening.

I love my Shepherd's voice;
His watchful eyes shall keep
My wandering soul among
The thousands of his sheep:
He feeds his flock,

He calls their names;
His bosom bears

The tender lambs.

[blocks in formation]

O God of all grace, who gavest thy beloved Son that we might have life, and that we might have it more abundantly! we beseech thee to grant that of his fulness we may receive grace sufficient for us, to make us strong in the Lord, and ready to every good work. Thy people, thou hast said, shall go from strength to strength, growing in grace, till they appear before thee in glory; and the path of the just is as the shining light, which shineth more and more unto the perfect day. But, O Lord, how barren and unfruitful have we been among the trees of righteousness! how weak are we still in our spiritual estate! how small is our
