upon us, miserable sinners, for Jesus Christ's sake! Father, forgive us, though we have sinned against heaven, and before thee.

And, O that, as the shadows of one evening after another are stretching themselves over us, our thoughts may be more steadily and seriously fixed on the approaching night of death, and the succeeding day of judgment! May we be above all things concerned to stand prepared for our departure hence, and that we may be found of Christ in peace when he appeareth. Thy word assures us, that when that awful morning shall dawn, many shall wish to have lain still in everlasting night; and shall call to the mountains and to the rocks to fall on them, and hide them from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. And, O Lord, shall any in our family be of this wretched number? O God forbid! To prevent so dreadful an end, help us, O Lord, to examine ourselves now. May we never be satisfied in any state or course of life, which is inconsistent with the sincerity and holiness which the Gospel requires at thy tribunal; and O thou great searcher of hearts, do thou still more thoroughly search us and try us see if

:

there be any wicked way in us, discover it to us, and lead us in the way of life everlasting that so, when day and night shall cease, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, we may lift up our heads with joy, knowing that our redemption draweth nigh! Amen.

MEDITATION

For Tuesday Morning.

"Wherefore the rather brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure, for if ye do these things ye shall never fall:

"For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly, into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." 2 Pet. i. 10.

How active and anxious are men in pursuing the things of the world; but how unconcerned and inactive in the ways of grace and holiness. Christians, however, should remember that the promises of God are made not to the slothful and the idle, but to the laborious and diligent christian. It is of him only who keeps his words, that the Son has said, "My Father will love him, and we will make our abode with him."

It is the will of God, that the hearts of his people should be warm and fervent in religious exercises. That service which hath not heavenly warmth is no service. Lukewarmness God cannot endure; but, as he forewarned the church at Laodicea, rejects with holy disgust. Let the slothful christian remember, that God loves activity in duty, and promises that, while "the soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; the soul of the diligent shall be made fat." It is only the energetic fervent prayer that availeth much.

If we would wear the crown, the race must be run: if we would share the triumph, the good fight must be fought, and the victory won he that would know, must follow on to know the Lord: he that would make his calling and election sure, and would never fall, but have an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, must give diligence thereto, and work out his salvation with fear and trembling.

Do you, then, complain of want of assurance? Be no longer formal, listless, and superficial in prayer. Stir up yourselves, and exert all your energies in seeking and serving the Lord; and then you shall soon have such communications from heaven,

as will fill you with joy unspeakable and

full of glory!

HYMN

For Tuesday Morning.

Stand up, my soul, shake off thy fears,
And gird the Gospel armour on;
March to the gates of endless joy,
Where thy great Captain Saviour's gone.

Hell and thy sins resist thy course;
But hell and sin are vanquish'd foes;
Thy Jesus nail'd them to the cross,
And sung the triumph when he rose.

What though the prince of darkness rage,
And waste the fury of his spite;
Eternal chains confine him down
To fiery deeps and endless night.

What though thine inward lusts rebel,
"Tis but a struggling gasp for life;
The weapons of victorious grace

Shall slay thy sins, and end the strife.

Then let my soul march boldly on,
Press forward to the heavenly gate;
There peace and joy eternal reign,
And glitt'ring robes for conquerors wait.

There shall I wear a starry crown,
And triumph in Almighty grace;
While all the armies of the skies,
Join in my glorious Leader's praise.

PRAYER

For Tuesday Morning.

FOR HOLINESS.

O Almighty and Eternal God! who is like unto thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?"Thou art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, neither shall sin dwell with thee." We desire to approach thy Divine Majesty most profoundly adoring thine infinite hatred of sin, thine inflexible determination to punish it; and thine awful justice manifested in the sacrifice of thy beloved Son, that he might be a propitiation for our sins. We would adore thy glorious holiness as shewn in the coming of Jesus Christ to put away sin, to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to purify us unto himself a peculiar people zealous of good works. O our God, create us anew in Christ Jesus, and cause us to hunger and thirst after righteousness:
