The movement of the population for the fiscal year was follows:

[blocks in formation]

During the year the room heretofore used for a hospital ward has been painted, a platform and curtain put in, and it is now used for religious services and amusements. The old kitchen was painted and a shelf put in and is now used for a clothing storeroom. The ward in Cottage 8 formerly used as a storeroom is now used as a ward for veterans who are allowed to remain in the institution after the death of their wives. All of the living-rooms for the inmates are kalsomined and now present a neat and attractive appearance.

The main kitchen has been kalsomined and a galvanized hood has been put over the coffee and tea urns, which keeps the steam from destroying the ceiling. A new bath tub and toilet has been put in for the use of the managers. A dozen fire extinguishers were purchased and placed in the new hospital and the cottages.

Eighty-five window screens and six screen doors were installed in the new hospital building. Three hundred and fifty pine trees were set out during the spring, of which 237 are doing well. An addition to the old wooden icehouse was made, giving room for the storage of 100 tons more ice to meet the increased needs of the new hospital, and the water supply has been improved by building a pipe line from the power-house to the river for fire purposes, and four more springs have been added to the upper reservoid for drinking purposes.
