PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THE favorable reception accorded to the first edition of this book indicates that a work of the kind was needed. There seems to be a demand for practical forms; and, to meet this want, an Appendix containing ninety forms has been added to this edition. These forms have been collected from approved precedents, and are believed to be substantially correct and reliable. The Equity Rules for the practice in Circuit Courts, relating to forms of bills, &c., are applicable, in many instances, to the practice in the Supreme Court in equity causes.

This volume contains all the sections of the Revised Statutes which confer jurisdiction upon the Supreme Court; all written rules for practice of the court; and the points of all decisions bearing upon such sections, rules, and other matters of practice, collected from one hundred and one volumes of Reports of the Supreme Court. The decisions are chronologically arranged under the sections, rules, and subjects to which they respectively relate. The dates show the terms of the court at which the decisions were rendered. The subdivision of pages by numbers is for convenience of reference through the index.

To avoid repetition, a decision not conveniently divisible, which refers, directly or indirectly, to more than one subject, is inserted once only; and the Index directs attention to each decision in every view.
