visited with temporal afflictions; and wherein these afflictions, or "judgments, are opposed to final condemnation;" and wherein also, the apostle "intimates that some of them at least, who were visited with those temporal judgments, were the children of God, and would be eternally saved."-Guise Par.

Q. 408. You have stated that the benefits to be derived from this Sacrament depend materially upon the previous state of the mind of the communicant: (Q. 382.) is it not therefore the duty of every communicant to prepare his mind to receive it rightly, or in a proper frame of spirit?

A. Yes, undoubtedly.

Q. 409. And how is this to be done?

A. By previous self-examination, and prayer.

Q. 410. Is it necessary, that a "week's preparation" should be made, before taking the Sacrament?

A. Such a preparation may be highly useful and edifying, if the motive, and object, and manner of using it be pure; but it is not necessary that the week previous to the participation of the Sacrament should be devoted to any unusual austerities. The sincere and humble Christian ought always to possess a frame of mind suited to commemorate the Redeemer's death, and to receive the communications of divine grace without such a preparation. And in general, those who are most scrupulous to observe this kind of "will worship," are afterwards the most worldly minded. It is therefore to be feared that self-righteousness, (a

spirit most hateful in the sight of God) is generally the motive which leads to such austerities; that to quiet conscience, and to form a ground of merit, are the objects; and that the manner of using them is formal, not spiritual; hypocritical, not sincere; proud, not humble. Nevertheless, every communicant should be duly prepared to receive the Sacrament with reverence, humility, charity, gratitude, and faith.
